Blue Flag Mutations?

I planted two Blue Flag plants a couple of years ago. Last year I got some smaller little blooms and this year the first blooms came out with 9 petals. The normal 3 petals and 6 petals inside. Is this sort of mutation normal? Does it mean anything?

I have photos if anyone wants to see.

Blue Flag...
Irises? What kind? Flag is used pretty loosely with the old historic bearded iris and the wild species. There are lots of different kinds.

Some will periodically bloom with extra standards and falls. There are even a few cultivars that do it consistently. Many iris ensata are that way.

The Iris City Gardens catalog lists a host of blue flag variations.

You don't say where you are. It's easy to just add your zone and state to your profile, then it shows up each time. All of my wet loving Irises came thru winter just fine here.

Looks like a blue flag(Harlequin), Iris versicolor. I have the smaller version in my pond, sent by a friend outside Buffalo NY where they are wild at her native pond. They are probably native in your area as well, Clairdo. They sure are pretty!
