white w/red violets

I have several different varieties of wild violets growing on my place. A new color showed up a couple years ago and is seeding true. This one is white with a red eye. Similar to the white with a blue eye. I already had a purple, blue, red, white, white w/blue eye, yellow and freckeles. Is this a natural hybrid that has just occured or just one that I hadn't seen before?

I sounds to me like you have something other than the usual wild native violets. Perhaps you have the offspring of some sort of domesticated violet that occurs in a wide variety of colors. There are many species of native violet, and each one would reproduce true from seed. That is, the offspring should look like the parents. Hybrids are possible, but not as common as various color appear to be in your garden. Have you tried to determine what species of violet you are growing?

I live in a rural area and have violets growing here naturaly and others that I have brought here from near bye neighbors or that I have purchased. I know that "Freckles" 1st appeared in neighboing Wisconsin.

could be... the older wood is very thin but very woody and brown on this particular plant so i will have to see when it grows out if it is black stemmed. i would be happy with black or red! I really liked the white flowers and floret shape and floret size on this one so yay for my grocery store hydrangea find!! :0) it is the first plant purchase for my new white garden.

Good on you, Mama Bear! Here are a few suggestions off the top of my head. What's the difference between a violet, a pansy, a viola, and a violetta ? Seeds: How to collect, store, sow, germinate (likely to have different answers depending on whether violet or pansy/viola/violetta) ? How to grow: soils, siting, exposure, hardiness, etc. ? Pests and diseases: how to control ? Which violets/pansies are scented ? Why are african violets not dicsussed here ? How to get rid of violets from lawns ? Suggestions of violets/pansies for specific sites: dry shade, wet shade, dry sun, wet sun, seaside exposure, extreme cold, high heat and humidity ? Is there are Cultivar Registration Authority (CRA) for Viola ? How can I contact them ? I have heard violets have two types of flower, please explain. And does this apply to all species of Viola ?

It is a pretty flower, thanks for showing. I dislike the Ma's andRob's names for their plants. I dislike the idea of violence associated with plants.They seem to have a very juvenile sense of humor. Too bad, because they seem to be pretty good hybridizers. So for reds, I look to the Mac's series or the Lyon's and leave the Rob's and Ma's for the specialists. Just my 25 cents.

I consulted an expert on Violas and this was suggested.

You might want to check with the people on the violet group. I used to visit it and was amazed at what colors violets have. I have seen red violets once in my life growing in the wild. A real treat.
