Closer Look: Violet's Magical Nursery
Lauren Hufnagl creates a chic and soothing nursery on a budget
While pregnant with her daughter Violet, Lauren Hufnagl wanted to create the perfect nursery. Since she was working with a small space on the top floor of her house, she knew it would be difficult to create a nursery that created a balance between restful and serene and playful and stimulating — all without becoming too busy. The solution was found in simplicity — Hufnagl stuck to a grown-up palette while accenting with quirky accessories, and relying on a "less is more" mentality. "I love modern children's design," she says. "But I was also trying to maintain a warm and cozy feeling."
Although it's now a soothing blend of foggy gray-blue and pops of orange and white, this space started out as something quite different. Before tackling this room, the walls were painted a bright red-orange and beige, with a paper sports-themed border. After promptly repainting the room and putting in new hardwood floors, trim, and beadboard, Hufnagl, who writes the blog With Two Cats, sat down and came up with a new concept for the room.

Hufnagl had the window seat cushion and the bumper custom made by a design company on Etsy. Those ended up being her main splurges for the nursery. She made up for it with all other finds: The pillows on the window seat are her own creations, and she purchased the glider (in perfect condition) at a neighbor's yard sale for $5!

The biggest challenge for Hufnagl and her husband was working with such a small space. A nursery has a lot of necessities, but they didn't want to room to become overcrowded and stifled. This little nook became the perfect spot for additional storage, and a great reason for Hufnagl to finally display her print from Made By Girl.

The dresser was a hand-me-down from one of her family members. Initially this piece was all oak. Hufnagl painted the outside white and replaced the knobs with chic metal-and-white pulls. The quirky metal owl on top was a gift from a co-worker and his wife.
