Turf ending and woodland beginning

I am in an on-going process of helping my parents. They have timber and I've mostly been removing invasive species out of there. Now my dad would like to add an area in front of the woodland edge with part shade and sun plants. The area gets sun till about 3pm. What I'm not understanding, is how you end the turf naturally, and go into native plants. The whole area and the timber, slopes down from the house. I'm afraid if all the turf is not there anymore, the rain runoff will cause erosion. It's hard to explain and I'm sorry, I don't have any pictures at this time. I'm hoping you understand what it is I'm saying/asking..which is basically stopping the turf from invading the native plantings.

If you have any questions, please ask and I'll do by best to explain further!
