these are growing wild at work:

is this green headed coneflower?

brown headed coneflower, or is it black eyed susan?

is this a native honeysuckle?

and a bush i have not a clue!

and at home:

giant yellow hyssop? i leave it only b/c the bees love it so much. it is a monster.

#1-- Verbesina alternifolia, wingstem
#2-- looks like brown-eyed susan (Rudbeckia hirta) from here
#3-- definitely honeysuckle, but all these perfoliate (leaves forming a continuous disk around the stem) species look the same to me...
#5-- Cystopteris protrusa; I'm not sure of the common name offhand, but something like "lowland fragile fern" or something; if you look around right now there're probably lots of them looking all bright green & happy in wet bottomlands and things...

patrick, you always impress me! all those small woodland ferns look alike to me. look how long it took me to post the pic of that fern i was speaking of last year. it now has more fronds than in that pic. after reading up on it now, i understand it is normal for them to die back no matter how well watered they are?

now i can go back to my fieldguide and mark some plants! i like to use my highlighter on the ones i see at work. thanks again.

johnatemp, you're right, I don't want to move the tv. That alcove next to the fireplace is really too small for the tv. Besides, there are cables coming from all over the house that get wired to the stereo that is with the tv. I had thought many times that I would like to make the area where the eating area is move of a lounge area. There are really too many doors in that area to make it a very cozy area. I have another area next to the kitchen that I'm doing that instead (and bigger). I have thought about removing the leaf in the table to make it smaller to fit the space better. Most of the time there is only 4 of us eating. Chris, the rug is situated the same way it was in the old location. I have it setting back a bit so that the lamp cord can hide under it and remove the trip hazard. I like the idea of the sofa table under the window. That statue is over 50 lbs, so I need help with that one (and we were in a hurry to go furniture shopping). I got some pretty good ideas while I was out. I'm thinking instead of a sectional, maybe an oversized chair with a couch or love seat? Either way, I'll only have seating for about 4 people (the corner in a sectional is pretty lost). I did find a curved sectional I liked, but it still only seated 4. I'm going to work on the end where the chair and ottoman are along with the table and chairs to see if I can come up with some more room. I'll take some more pictures and post when I'm done to see what you think. Also, any light recommendations for the table where the recliners are? I'd like to have something that doesn't sit on the table, but still worked as task lighting. The guys do play chess there frequently, so I need something that doesn't sit on the table, but will still give hoof task light. You're also right, Chris. I'm trying to get away from the log or cabin feel, and more or a transitional feel and try to accessorize with our horse "stuff". Robbi

Thanks - the tile was pretty inexpensive (except for the deco pieces - $10 each) - the green one had already been discontinued when I bought it in 2007. I already called Marazzi a year ago looking for it. They only made it for Home Depot, didn't have any more of the decos. Though maybe they have some field tile left. I need about 150sf of it (10 cases) - I have 1 case left, and some that need to have thinset cleaned off them but if I do that maybe I can get by with less (maybe 20sf in basement? So 9 cases? Probably not worth it). It's called Antica Spagna. The white tile is also by Marazzi, it's Pietra in Alabaster color - I have 150sf of that left (bought last summer when we were replacing some, bought extra to do future breakfast bumpout). but I'd need about 200sf more (about 13 cases) - again, have some (maybe 25 sf?) downstairs we could clean up. That was probably also only made for Home Depot. I'd love to do travertine, but don't know if my structure will support it - Bill? Maybe do travertine-look porcelain throughout? I don't want to deal with this - am worried that demo will damage my BC floor in the DR (dust, etc. - will definitely have to get mew T-mold, not a problem) that I just had replaced in Sept (original 2007 floor defective - Home Depot reimbursed for materials, not labor), possibly kitchen cabinets, and now that we've moved in I have absolutely no place to store everything I have to take out of coat closets and pantry floor, all the appliances, we waited til all the ceilings were retaped and repainted to get new furniture, the sheetrock dust was horrible, concrete (grout/thinset)dust will be worse. I just hate this house! Our dream house has turned into a nightmare and a money pit between the DR floor, the ceilings, and now the tile! At least the carpet and the upstairs tile that was DIY are OK. As you can see, I'm still working on trim (won't put it up in tiled areas until this is resolved).

Ok, I stopped at Bed, Bath and Beyond tonight. They did not have the grommet curtains in-stock in the 95" but I can order them. Not sure about the color, though--the white is too white and the cream might be too cream. I bought this "Eggshell" Argentina Interlined Taffeta Pole Top panel to try. It has a lovely sheen and a very nice feel/weight to it. $49.99 per 54x95" panel. I would have them hemmed to just barely break on the floor. I hung it from rings because I don't like pole pockets, but can someone please tell me the correct placement of the clips?? There has to be a method to it... I bought a package that came with 7 rings/clips and used all of them. I also hung a grommet panel in a Champagne color that I love. It came from World Market. I don't think I can get it any longer than 84" though.

On these little lowland Cystopteris, they basically act like spring ephemeral flowers. Great big pulse of growth in early spring, then they slowly die back through the summer until there are just a few tattered fronds by fall. Like other spring ephemerals, I assume this is more of an adaptation to light availability through the year rather than having anything to do with moisture. Interestingly, most other species in the genus grow on rock and don't seem to show any strong seasonal pattern apart from losing leaves in winter.

i am going to have to look closer at my other one. i think that one used to grow on a rock wall (i try to save plants in danger of damage at work)

#2 looks an awful lot of Rudbeckia triloba to me. Read descriptions of both R. hirta and R. triloba and it should be easy to determine which it is.

well, looking at the usda, triloba isn't as petaliforous -my new word, meaning many petals :)--- as hirta.
thank you, shelley. also, do you have a link to those descriptions? i am having a hard time.

on that note, i always thought that black eyed susan had those thick leaves that are fuzzy to the point of near downyness. my description sounds like lamb's ears, so not quite as fuzzy and thick as those.

simply put, i see triloba leaves are broader, and hirta has more hairs on the stem.
