Azalea blooming at the wrong time

bitterwort

A friend of mine who lives in St. Paul has a Lemon azalea (not sure if that's the full name) that she planted three years ago on the northeast corner of her house. Now, for the second year in a row, it's blooming. Of course, this late in the year, the show won't be good and the remaining buds will likely freeze. Last year, it failed to bloom in the spring, presumably because the flower buds had been used up.

The question is, is there any way that in future years she can prevent the flower buds from being triggered to bloom in the fall so that she can get the desired spring bloom? (Also, any ideas about why it's doing this? It's 3' or so away from the house.) Thanks!
