Anyone else disappointed in Beckoning

I was excited when i first purchased Beckoning because of the photos of the plant, but I have since become somewhat disenchanted with it in the last couple of years. The color doesn't develop well and doesn't seem to be that good of a grower. I have it full shade and I'm thinking I should maybe move it to a sunnier location to see if it does any better. If not, bye bye Beckoning. Anyone opinions? Thanks, Tim

Tim, I bought Beckoning last fall, and it was beautiful. This year it hasn't yet shown its golden color. I had in in full shade, but I moved it a week ago into dappled shade. It seems to be turning a bit golder, but this seems to be a long time to wait for it to develop. It did progress nicely in size however. I wonder what others think?

Maria i had very good luck with Dixie Speckled Butter Pea limas this year. Only a four foot row but i have been able to pick a meal every few weeks and they have good flavor. My goal is to have perennial, low maintenance vegetables that produce a continous small harvest and these little beans are perfect for that. The only drawback is that picking from the bush form can be a little tedious, especially if you have a 100' row to pick! i will be slowly experimenting with some pole varieties in the future. There is a lima bean thread on the bean forum with a picture of some Hopi Limas that are absolutely eye-popping, just smothered in fat little pods. You might want to pop over and check it out. Seems like a lot of folks had unusually cold, wet summer weather this year and i think Limas like it warm so yes, hope the sun is stronger next year for you ; ) MN gardener-how different our experiences are! Long beans and cowpeas absolutely decimated by powdery mildew this year in my garden, green beans almost as bad. The limas? Untouched. One of the few pest and disease free crops for me this year.

I don't recognize the problem -- when we had Lamarque, it was fine. Realize that there are two (at least) roses out there going by that name. The one Jeri grows is very likely what is often called "California Lamarque." The other one, "Thomasville Lamarque" is more often seen in the South -- it's less vigorous, and has larger clusters of smaller flowers. Who knows which one is the "real" Lamarque. But in any case, both of them should do fine in Ocala, so I don't know what the problem is. I've only ever grown them on 'Fortuniana' roots, so I don't know how either should perform, own-root, in Florida. Malcolm

Heather--whether you like it or not, there is medical evidence that our brains don't fully mature until we're in our mid-20's. Before that, the brain is capable of making emotional decisions, but the logical thinking portion of the brain isn't fully matured. Yes, we tell 18 year olds they're legally adults. Yes, we let them work, join the military, make decisions about their future, get married--but they aren't truly equipped for those jobs. Some get lucky--I got engaged and married in my early 20's and am still married to the love of my life 35+ years later. But yes, at 23, he's still a kid in a lot of ways, and still in a stage of life where he's likely to make poor decisions. Add to that his own personal limitations, I don't think you can come down too hard on him. As I said, I wasn't overly surprised by this, and personally--I don't like people in the public eye setting a poor example that children may think is 'cool', but I also think we have to understand that this fellow is still a child, with learning issues, and the same right as the rest of us to do stupid things at inopportune times.

There was a thread on this very topic not terribly long ago with pictures. Most posters agreed that the door misallignment didn't seem like an issue that would bother them. That's true, you could remake the cabinet doors to match the frig, but to me, that would not look right. I too, have a KA SxS with wood panels, so I just chose to leave the area above as an open shelf with a light and decorative arch for display purposes only. That could still be an option for you if the doors truly bother you. As for the mismatch on the SxS doors themselves, I think I understand what you mean. I did not choose to have the external ice dispenser, so I didn't have to deal with this. Maybe someone you know with a digital camera could help you post a picture- I'm sure it would help you get some great suggestions. I'm guessing they built it that way because there is so little clearance on the sides of the ice dispenser, that there is no way to achieve the look of the horizontal piece of the frame, like you have on the right door. Hope that makes sense.

My Blue Angel that is only 15 feet away (planted at the same time both from 1 gallon pots) is twice as big. Guardian Angel, White Angel Supreme and Earth Angel have all proven to be much better growers than Beckoning. After 2 years, it really doesn't seem to be anything special. So keep an eye on your mail box Ken, it may be coming to you. Tim

Mine was easten to the ground by deer in early May, but it is valiently struggling back. What I think is a little odd is the color change process. It looks butt ugly until it is completely gold in the middle.

My Guardian Angel is huge after 5 years, Earth Angel took off after 3, Angel Eyes is on its 2nd year. Beckoning has been in the ground 3 years and is just starting to show some real promise. Put me on the list if someone wants to send their Beckoning off to a new home:)
Water, fertilizer, sun, shade......but TIME is the hardest thing we can give them:)

but one is a solid color plant..

and the other is a centered plant..

if you had to guess... which is inherently weaker????

regardless.... if it doesnt please you.. get rid of it... this is always the bottom line ...
