I need help...

We just moved to a house and I'm trying to identify a very unusual plant in my flowerbed. This plant was nice and green in January and grows in big mounds. The leaves (maybe 75-100 per mound) are a nice medium green color with a strong stem that grows upward. It has no smell and some of the leaves measure 6"x12" in size. I do not see any signs of a flower and it grows in full sun. Looks like you could throw it in a pot and cook it! :-)

Could this be a sunflower of some kind? The previous homeowner mentioned sunflowers in that area. Our nurseryman is stumped.
