H. 'Sum of all' & H. 'Wylde green cream'

Hi, I'm new here. I've been reading for about a week. I seem to have started collecting hostas recently, and today I added these two. Does anyone have them? Comments about siting would be really welcome and helpful.

I'll take some pic's when the light is better.

I have a young Sum of All,but it isn't growing very fast,due to our ever present drought. I don't have Wylde Green Cream. Sum of All is a sport of Sum and Sub,which is a huge hosta,and maybe some day it,too will be big. Phil

my sum of all was growing fine but it did not come back this year and i have no idea why - the other hostas near it are fine??? i hear it is harder to grow but it was really odd

Thanks everyone! Yume, Graffiti and Viridi have very similar color patterns and inherited papilio's wide petalled "wings". Jungle Joy did not inherit this and has thinner petals which most probably is the reason why it is greener. It could be the cooler fall temps likewise. I will try to cross this one with Jungle Lady and hope to get more frilly petalled results with red picotee. I love them picoteed frills!

That is unfortunate news in my ears, and I regret that you did not obtain blooms in this long time span. On the other hand I am confident that I shall receive blooms in fall 2007 - provided the plants will now continue for a prolonged time in the magnitude of growth velocity which I actually observe. You certainly know that I administer lukewarm water - but from the bottom, including diluted fertilizer every time ( 1 ml/L of a liquid 6-3-6 brand). I definitely intend to use "Silhouette" for breeding purposes (if you have not guessed this already, too) - and I want to see the seedlings with their center stripe in my balkony box which I use as hippeastrummateous kindergardens, in the wisdom of numerousity - and regardless whether the ligament be creamy or pure white. And certainly you can also guess what knight star lily I have in mind to rendezvous this tiny "Silhouette" with. For now I wrap myself into silence (forgive my likely inappropriate terminology) - nevertheless these respective amaryllis' are overreadily waiting for their time to come, in rather huge containers

OMG finally found this post again, after Ringlady was nice enough to type this in for me this AM. I tried Shirley's recipe today. It is to die for. I actually think I like this better than the roasted red pepper spread, and I am pretty die hard when it comes to that. First thing this morning I tried the recipe but instead of tomatoes, which I didn't have, I tried peaches and poured cider vinegar instead of the white one. (10 peaches instead of the tomatoes if someone is interested). It is amazing, and much closer to what I wanted when I tried the peach salsa last year as far as peachy taste is concerned. Fairly hot too, and I removed all the seeds from the peppers. Next, this afternoon, I tried the tomato version with white vinegar. Hummm, this is when I am in trouble. I cannot decide which is the version I like best now. I think I am almost inclined to go with the tomato version, though the other one is real interesting. Strangely, the tomato mix is not as hot. So I guess I will have to sit with a spoon and try both until I can make up my mind.... or maybe someone else care to try them and let me know? LOL. I guess the alternative is to invite lots of people and let them try....but that means opening all these little jars... ooooohhh.... Anyway, thank you for an amazing recipe. I will be making lots of it tomorrow. Marie

Janice, I'm sorry to hear about Steves back. My hubby had that years ago and the doctor wanted to try some ?experimental? treatment of shooting papaya into it. Fortunately he never did that (side effect could have caused paralysis) and it ended up healing itself. I hope your trip will be great once you get to go. Are you going to Ken's or is that part of the canceled plans? I'm going to go out in a minute and look at Abba Dabba Do. I know the margin is not white but may have faded to cream. It gets sun from eleven or twelve until two or three - hot. evermore, We are certainly in the area of the fires but not that close this time. We have lots of smoke depending on the way the wind blows. There is one fire that's stayed pretty out of control Momich Lake west of here (probably one hour). Our view looks west so we have been seeing a lot of that one. There's a really bad one on Okanagan Lake between Kelowna and Vernon on the west side. It's grown over the last few weeks with the wind and there have been lots of evacuations. That the Terrace Mountain Fire. Yesterday I took a friend to the airport in Kelowna, passing through Vernon and the smoke was terrible. The radio was warning people to avoid going outside though I didn't see alot of cooperation by the amount of the traffic. It was 11 years ago today- August 5 - that Salmon Arm was threatened by a devistating fire. The fire had started a week before in a south western part of town called Silver Creek. It was fairly remote and the story was that the forest service was letting some of the area burn because we've been plagued with Pine Beetles. On the night of Aug 5, my husbands birthday, we had friends over and were barbquing on the west side of the house. The wind came up and we watched the smoke spread from south to north. We were getting live embers and ash landing all around. It got worse over the evening and one couple who lived on the northwest side of Salmon Arm left. When they got home they called and said as they'd passed through town they saw the fire rush from the bottom to the top of Mount Ida which borders the southern side of the town. It only took 20 minutes to get to the top. The next weeks were basically a nightmare and the whole central part of town was evacuated. It was over 8000 people. The outskirts, where we are, were on ten minute alert for over a week. We chose to leave anyway since we had a dog, 7 cats and two horses at the time. If the predicted wind had not been as high up in the air as it was the town would have been gone. At that time it was the largest evacuation in BC. There were homes, barns and animals lost in Silver Creek as it swept through. Since that time there was a terrible fire in Kelowna (one of the largest cities in BC) and over 300,000 poeple were evacuated with hundreds of homes lost. Its really very frightening.

My Sum of All came back, it is butt ugly. I will take a photo in the morning. I have not seen such an unattractive hosta in a long time. I think the originator should be tar and feathered. THis one never should have been introduced into commerce. If you can return it, I would, but that is JMHO.

Wylde Green Cream OTOH is very nice! Mine was a gift from a forum friend and I totally love it. It increases like gang busters and always looks great. And yes, I will post photos tomorrow....

I have 3, er make that 2, Sum of All. I had to return one to a local grower yesterday due to HVX. If you want to see a pic, go to the thread "need hvx confirmation fast".

It was 1 eye when purchased last year and 4 eyes this year. Nice big leaves too. GORGEOUS. I had mine sited in mostly dappled shade and about 3 hours of morning light.

Thanks, you all. I just read the HVX thread, scary! Jeez, I did not realize that the virus can lie dormant for so long. something to be on the alert for. At this point, any hostas that came from mass market(Monrovia), have been in the ground for at least 8 years. Are they safe? All my more recent purchases came from reputable hosta growers.
I saw a mature clump of Sum of All at the nursery, have just the spot for it, had to have it, lol.

My Sum of All has grown fine for me...I like the narrow yellow margin to it. This hosta can attain 36"High by 80"wide.

As for Wylde Green Cream, you have made a good choice. Here's my 2007 pic:

Here is my Sum of All... it gets morning sun thed dappled shade the rest of the day. And yes, it ALWAYS burnd at the edge and looks this bad. You can click on the thumbnails to enlarge the photos.

WYLDE GREEN CREAM looks great and is a great grower.

Oh my--Alexa, your pic. of WYLDE GREEN CREAM really resembles 'Just So' which I dearly love but find difficult to get!!!!
Is it as yellowy green/chartreuse center as it appears in your pic? I guess it would depend on my monitor, but it does look
very much like the one I use to have!

My Sum of All is about 3 yrs old & HUGE! The leaves are the size of a round meat platter (at least 15").

Yes, the photo is a true representation (on my monitor) of what it really looks like. It is a great grower and the colors are very bright.

Sum of All seems to be a variety that produced very mixed results when it was tissue cultured. Mine is doing well, being a slow but steady growing plant. It is also relegated to the 'back 40', where weeding, watering, and other care are generally nonexistant, but is still holding it's own. Apparently there have been several batches of tc SOA that are very poor growers, but if your plant is a good size already rather than a tissue culture tiny, it should be okay.

Wylde Green Cream is a Jim Stratton hybrid, and as you can tell from the enthusiasm of others here, it's a terrific variety. I have 2 clumps, one of them originator stock, the other tissue culture, and both do well, looking good all season. It is a sport of Vanilla Cream, and the Strattons live on Wylde Green Road in Iowa City, Iowa, which explains the name.

My Sum of All is growing mostly in half shade and does not have burning of the leaves as Alexa demonstrated. Perhaps this is because I live in a colder zone...
I believe also that Parhelion is a duplicate of Sum of All.

I mentioned above that I like the narrow yellow margin of SOA. Sorry I should have said...the NARROW WHITE MARGIN...as you can see in the above pic.

Papou--that looks like my 'Parhelion'! My 'Sum of All' definitely had the yellow margins--are you sure of the name of that one?
So did my 'Lady Isobel Barnett', even when it was in full sun about 5 hours a day!

Here's my 'Parhelion':

I know that there is some thought that SOA and Titanic may be the same plant!! I purchased 'Titanic' to replace my SOA
which didn't make it through the Spring of '07 devastation!

If you look at the photos on the Hosta Library, the margins on Sum of All are MUCH wider than the one you posted, Papou. I think that yours is Parhelion (which I also have planted near Sum Of All) and it is a far superior plant in every aspect. I will post phtoos of my Parhelion tomorrow.

I agree with the others,Papou. Your pic is of Parhelion which has the narrow margin. I have both,and Sum of All has a much wider gold margin,and is slower growing,(in my garden,at least). Also,Parhelion can take a lot more sun,as mine grows in near full sun,and doesn't burn. Phil

Sum of All and Parhelion are two different hostas. I realize this now.
I can only think that when I purchased Sum of All, the supplier actually provided me with Parhelion. Now I need to buy a REAL Sum of All....

Your gardens are beautiful, as are your hostas. Thank you for posting the photos. The H. 'Sum of All' I bought is a nice big division, I put it in dappled shade, with good moisture. The nursery it came from has a v. large, beautiful plant in full shade. If I need to move it I will.
I'm thrilled with the Wild Green Cream, I'll put that close to a walk way.
I feel as though I am learning so much just by reading all your posts on this forum. Wonderful!

My Sum of All is nothing special, going into it's 4th year in the ground, however it is in the same tough bed I mentioned in my post about Pandora's Box.(Large cottonwood tree and prairie winds. )Maybe I'll have to look for a gentler environment for it. Sum It Up however is magnificent, also 4 years old and larger than S & S.
