I'm in canada, over here the blue ones are called lupines.

Rachel, They are lupines down here too. Texas Bluebonnet is actually a small species of lupine(Lupinus texensis). When Governor Johnson (later President Johnson) was in office in Texas, his wife had these two flowers planted along highways all over the state.

I always wish I lived in the hill country this time of year!!
When I was a kid Ladybird Johnson started a program to re-introduce these beauties back to the roadsides. You could pick-up biodegradable seed packets everywhere for free and toss them out of you car window. I'd say it was a great success!

As an Okie, I have seen the Bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrush in Texas, and it is just stunning! I would love to be able to grow the castilleja, but it is a difficult plant to get started in the home garden. What beautiful photos of beautiful wildflowers!

Susan, I'm an old Okie too, although transplanted up here to Pennsylvania for the last 38 years. The wildflowers on the Texas roadsides are wonderful. I always loved the paintbrush and bluebonnets, but also the little star flowered phlox and the winecups (Callirhoe). All of them but the winecups are too tender to grow up here, but the Callirhoe do wonderfully.

We lived in NETX for years and i loved the wild flowers. I remember larkspurs and bachalor buttons the bright yellow daisy types,pink mallows and along the sabine those white spider lily looking flowers. Flowers, flowers,everywhere.We drove the roads alot back then.
