It's certainly a flax. You say 'down the road' as if this might be in a location where people have been active rather than a really wild place. Could it possibly be a stray plant of common flax, Linum usitatissimum, which is a crop grown in Texas according a quick Google. Just a thought.

Common name is from its affinity for the shade of "cedar" trees. It's a good shade/understory plant. Ours is growing under a dwarf peach. The following NPSOT article provides more background. I love them, Mine were wild on my land. They will seed themselves and slowly get a ground cover going. They bloom at the same time as ajuga repins and columbine usually if you like color combinations of bright primary colors. Like linda says, tough as nails if you have well draining soil. They grow in cedar breaks in the hill country. They will not turn up their nose to a Escarpment Live Oak.
