I just didn't like the look of the S&S I got, so I returned it and got instead...

Wow, those are two beauties plus good sized already. I had to look up Morning Light in the Hosta Photo Library as I had never seen it before. It is a reverse of Twilight which I do have. Of course GE is a huge favorite. Plant it where you can give it extra water and some fertilizer and talk to it every day--it likes all the attention it can get--like a spoiled puppy. LOL (but worth all the trouble!) Mary

We can grow them in the ground here in Texas. I personally prefer to grow a couple in the house with just a tiny bit of water in about an inch of pebbles. They have little glass bulb holders you can plant them in. That way you can have one blooming in your house. I love all of them. Then after it's finished blooming I cut all the water from it and let it go dormant. Then as soon as I can get out and plant it in the yard I do so. Here in Texas it is better if you do not cover the entire bulb. Leave the top 1/3 out of the ground. In a few years you should have a bunch of Amaryllis. Out side they don't bloom until around Easter here. Got to go, going shopping to pick up a couple more gifts. P.S. Lowes has some reduced to 1/2 price right now. Merry Christmas Ya'll, Marian

Your guess is the same as mine... a little seedling... frankly, if you are growing hostas and not getting volunteers, it is probably because you are a good weeder and/or use preen. Not all hostas will set seed, and not all seed is fertile, but lots of varieties are very fertile. S&S, for example, is a very good breeder. If you move it, you'll know the answer. A young seedling will probably have no identifiable crown and about two major roots heading out as much horizontal as vertical. If it is a piece of an older crown, you'd likely find a little chunk of crown at the base of the eye. As far as care goes... hosta seedlings behave pretty much like anything else you start from seed. They like moist soil, plenty of water - but they want good drainage so they don't rot. They like bright shade, especially a yellow one. Enjoy your baby - and leave some areas unweeded or watch for teeny teeny teeny hosta leaves when you weed. The emerging seedling will often have one leaf that looks like its stem is under the earth and half or two-thirds of the leaf sticking out - and the leaf will be perfectly hosta leaf shaped - except tiny tiny tiny tiny version of a miniature. Better yet - collect some seed and plant it like you would carrots next spring. If you are excited about your first little yellow seedling, I can only imagine how you'll respond to a row of mixed yellow, green, and blue seedlings. You don't even have to collect seed from a lot of plants as the seed from even one plant may very well give you babies in all colors and sizes... Better yet - find somebody who started seeds this winter and can't bring themselves to commit hostacide - lots of seed starters end up with hundreds, maybe thousands, more seedlings than they can keep. Anybody live near St. Louis that wants to give BettyLu a hundred seedlings of so to adopt?

does not look like s&s to me but it could be. the leaves look to thin and floppy - but it is a pic. and i would expect them to have rounder leaves as it is not that small of a plant so i doubt it is s&s but it is really hard (at least for me) to tell from a pic. they do all look nice and healthy

Thank you all for the responses. I did wait about 8 minutes even though the recipe says 5, so that was the problem. I know because I made it again (just had to see if I could do it! I will freeze a lot of it)(found a different recipe, but for the same size pan) and turned it out the instant it came out the oven. It came out perfectly! I have made it in a cast iron skillet when I was teenager at my grandmothers house... I don't own one, but maybe it's time to consider buying one! The ugly one tasted OK, but it was dry... I just pour milk over it when I want a piece. Gldno1, I also tried to stop baking (and stop attending this forum) in an effort to lose weight. I was still just as fat, just got sad on top of it. I'd rather be plump and happy than skinny and miserable! I enjoy baking (and this forum) and cannot stop!

Uh Oh - I think what I thought I bought from Lowes was June. Now that I see your GE I think that's my June. It didn't have a tag. That's why everyone's June pictures seem to have a wider blue border. I feel dumb and I ordered a GE that's not as big and is in another area of my garden. Thought they were similar but that GE isn't very big. I've never seen either in person. My one from Lowes is growing nicely for me though. Does Lowes carry GE? I don't have one around here. Now I guess I NEED June. How am I going to smuggle another mail-order plant into my garden without my husband knowing? I went from 5 varieties to 50 this year already.

Plant it and enjoy what you get, treat it like spoiled brat and don't waste your time unless it earns it.

Wow - you sure did trade easy for challenging! Make sure you use a big plant marker for Morning Light, that way next year you will know where it was. Morning Light is the only hosta I've ever lost twice. The first one vanished, I bought another and tried a different spot and the second one vanished the following year.

Good luck with GE also - drown it and fertilize it on a regular basis....

yikes! You guys are scaring me! Should I just keep them in bigger pots over the winter? I can baby them all they want. I'm good at that. I rarely lose a plant, but I've never dealt with hostas before.
I always ammend the soil with enriched top soil and decomposed manure and compost. For these, I will dig extra large holes so they won't be competing with any other roots. I will also mulch and water frequently and fertizile. If they don't come back next year after all my efforts then I will never buy them again.
