Almost all crabapples fruit. There's a new white-flowering fruitless variety out, and there may be a few other fruitless types as well. The question is what the fruit would be like. The fruit on many ornamental crabapples is tiny and not particularly tasty. Other ornamental crabapples have tasty fruit. If you only want a little fruit to attract birds, you might look for branches and buds with red coloring, which would indicate that they're not the most common fruitless type, which I think is devoid of red color in the leaves. I don't know of any way for a non-expert to determine variety on a dormant tree.

Thank you - I looked up birdhouse gourd and this is it! The flowers only come out at night and I just noticed them today.

What happened to Jay's coyote? I was trying to decipher what that meant or how it might be pertinent to the matter at hand. The two clematis species here are so closely related I would think they would readily hybridize making ID of the offspring more challenging. Jay do you have a picture of a coyote breeding with a dog or vice versa?
