My Hosta Has Produced its Own New Totally Different Hosta?, ID?

HI guys!

I hope you can help me. I have this hosta, quite big now. I bought it from a nursery. Unfortunately, the label is gone, I am so upset! While the nursey did have a nice selection of hosta, I assume that this hosta is probably a common one.

So first question, can someone identify the parent hosta? If I heard the name, I probably would remember what it was.

Second, this hosta has seemed to produce it own totally different hosta! I guess this would be a sport?

Can someone explain this to me. Does this baby of the mother have an ID also, or would it be a totally new hosta? Please help me! thanks so much! Christy BTW, these were taken today, my camera's date is wrong!

The *mother* looks like 'Honeybells'!! The *baby* (maybe adopted) looks like 'Francee'! Wonder if somehow a 'Francee'
got put with the 'Honeybells' from TC trays?

How long have you had the 'Honeybells' (my guess)?

I have had this for about 2 years now. When I purchased it, I did not see the little hosta in there, and I think I would have noticed it, but who knows? Anything is possible.

I have this in pretty deep shade. The mother plant has grown pretty fast. I have it in a container since the ground dirt is not ideal where it is now. I probably have to transplant it soon.

The little one does have a nice deep blue, somewhat glossy hue to it.

Strange, isn't it?

Oh yes! My girls and I often find terrific buys like that - we go to the nursery very early in March and come home w $1 Delphs and Lupines, for example and stand agape when it's flowering time! At end of the season for shrubs n trees! I have a dwarf Korean Lilac that I only paid $7 for that I love to talk about. Glad someone else out there that appreciates the potential and looks beyond the aesthetics sometimes. Double the pleasure!

Hi Joe, I'm in KC too. Welcome to the wonderful world of hostas! I'm impressed with those plants, considering that it's August, and they're not crispy fried. Suburban must take good care of their plants - I don't think I've ever been out there. And pricewise, you got a steal! I disagree with whoever said you can't overwater hostas. There are some that don't like boatloads of water. I killed a young tokudama aureonebulosa this year with too much watering. I'd stick with watering when they look like they need it. By the way, for the purposes of purchasing plants for our zone, if you're in the KC area, you're zone 5. Have fun with your new babies! Deanna

Thank you for your response, kay and jo. Jo, I'm hoping you are talking about Royal Standard. Because, for the purpose of keeping any sanity I may have left, at some point I have to draw a line and stop going back and forth back and forth on MY hosts ID's. Thanks in part to this thread, a week ago I didn't have name to my Plantagineas. Now I do. I've noticed my neighbor has some P, another garden I was in this week has some P; they are the same color - light green. Maybe they all come up light green and turn darker under complete shade! Mine, under various locations and conditions always remain light green. I might have a couple of RS. They are darker green but seem to have smaller leaves than what I think RS should have. I'll have to do further investigation on those. Maybe next year!!! I'm happy I Identified my Undulatas this past week, as well. Yeah, Ken's scale was very nice, very informative. What are the odds I 'll find this thread come August? But I do still have one hosta in various locations that I don't know what it is (and driving me kind of nuts) that I'm quite sure many of the people on this forum would know immediately! Someone asked me this week what that is ( I have many of my hostas name tag staked) and had to respond with "I don't know - maybe a Sagicrabbyass") If I had to take a stab at it I'd call it a Frances Williams.

miles if you can see any of the stem on a tree peony it is not planted too deep. It may be that if you planted it only last year the stems are not developed enough to have bloom buds. They are not like some herbaceous and need to be planted two inches or less under the soil a minimum of four but even better most of the stem. Peonies of all types need time to adjust to where they are planted. Even though tree peonies can have blooms the first year that is very very unusual. I have about 25+- of them. The bloom bud stems were developed within the small almost invisible bud on the side of the stem several years ago. In my garden I start seeing next years bloom buds start forming toward the end of June and early July. If your tree peony did not have secondary stems at that time last year it is very unlikely that you would have had any blooms this year. Peonies of all type bloom on their own schedule and moving them around on your whim increases that schedule. In my area KCMO if I would plant tree peonies in open sun rather than the various shaded spots I would have one day of bloom then petals on the ground the next when our temps go from 50 to 90F in a days time.

Ok, I just made sure, I did get this 2 summers ago. It has gotten quite larger since I bought it. I really wish the label did not dissapear, as atleast I would know what the parent was, if it is a parent. Do you really think it was 2 mixed in one, and not part of the original plant? I know I did not see the new plant when I bought it. This is so weird. I really hope people will help me on this!

Ok, SOOOO not an expert in this, but...

It looks like the veining is different.... I think your new plant has a different number of veins and different veining pattern.

I also think the leaf shape is different.

I wonder if it could have been a seed that might have been deposited within the body of the mama plant?

does the green one look like undulata erromena??

and i agree the other is wholly unrelated ... looking like about 100 other dark green white edged named plants.. AT THAT SIZE ...

in 5 years we might be able to be more precise with a name ...

not a seed... seedlings are solid colored or streaked... so it wouldn't have this nice clear margin.

Starting with the big one... my impression was also Honeybells. Honeybells has plantaginea heritage, so it has three of that species' traits - shiny, glossy leaves, sun tolerance, and fragrant flowers. The flowers aren't the big showy white plantaginea flowers, more lavender. Those traits should help you decide if that's what you have.

The little one doesn't appear to have much in common with the big one. Looks like a young Fortunei Albomarginata.

I have to suspect it is a stowaway, either a fragment that got in with the Honeybells at the nursery or snuck in with your potting soil at home. If you don't have one like it in your garden, then the first possibility seems the most likely...

Thanks so much all of you!!!! So we are pretty much in agreement that they are 2 different hostas that just happened to get mixed up? That is so weird, especially since I never saw the other hosta until recently. INteresting though.

Do you think I should split them up or will that cause harm to them?

well... that would be the ultimate way to check our hypothesis... dig it up, wash the root ball so you can carefully untangle - I'll bet you find that the second comes out as separate crown. If it is attached, then it is a sport...
