The Hosta Bug - they've got it BAD!

Let's see... we're a couple of hundred miles from home. We've got two kayaks, two bikes, luggage, garden sculpture, and a giant ornamental bird house. What shall we do?

Let's get a few hostas to fill up the car!

Hmmm... looks like we can use the whole trunk and backseat...

Ummm... running out of space here!

Even the fender looks hostaish!

The back seat...

And what do we do with the big honkin' bird house! Aw, heck... it's only a few hours...

Lol, Jim! That looks like something I (or most people here for that matter) would do! Too bad it's Illegal to tie a person or two to the roof (just kidding). I'm surprised you can squeeze any more hostas into your garden. You must have some open areas that weren't in your previous pictures.

HooooBOY, do they have it bad. But then, I've never had the opportunity to drive up to a hosta nursery and see how well I resist temptation to fill er up.

More space here is an option, IF we buy the house behind us, or the vacant one next to it. Lots of shade in both lots. 300 feet deep from the street, big spaces 100 feet wide. So must keep an eye out when it goes on the market. Room for display? I reckon so!

Nota, how big is your new hibiscus? Ok, I'm sure leaves are yellowing because of different environment..I KNOW this for fact. It's a good idea to check for pests, especially mites, scale and white fly. They should be easy to spot..and it never hurts to check Hibs do need 1. fresh air 2 humidity and 3. sun. \ Many of my tree hibs leaves are yellowing..it's too large for me to place in the sink or carry upstairs to the shower so the best I can do is mist. Remove yellow leave..if you leave them on and they fall in the soil this WILL attract bugs. I'm sure the leaves are yellowing becaues of the change. You want to duplicate the area in which it was shipped. If easy to carry to sink, do so once a wk.. I also really advise buying hib food at either www.stokestropical.com or www.plumeriapeople.com This food is only u sed on hibs..Since I've been using I've been able to keep a hib longer than a yr..my tree was bought in the mid-90's, so you see what I mean..Just sprinkle food on soil then water..it lasts 3 months. I divide mine in thirds so it needs feeding once a month. A little goes a long way. You apply food by size of pot..so say my 12" pot requires 2 teaspoons of food..they also give u a little measuering spoon. My hib is in south and east windows.. They only get watered when soil is dry. Misted daily. summer outdoors..this is important..you wouldn't believe the difference when they're growing outside in full sun. Even iin summer I let soil dry a bit, and after a rain shower flowers burst out. I feed my hib (one of two types of plants) yr round..Hibiscus do not go dormant, but becuase of lack of sun, etc, it does seem to slow down..in leaf growth and floweirng, but if you have sunny days they will bloom all yr..One thing about winter is, flowers do not grow as large as they do in summer when outdoors. Flowers last 1-2 days so this is normal. But w/good care there should always be flowers on a hib. Enclosed is a pic of my hib..didn't shoot the whole tree, but what you see is the middle and top. I purchased a systemic product - I think it is called Bayer Tree and Shrub. They had it at Lowes right in front of the check out in the garden center (it's in a blue bottle). Just mix it with some water in a bucket and pour it around the base of trees and shrubs that you have problems with. Last year those darn JBs totally defoliated a tree in my yard in a matter of days, and it was too late to act by the time I realized it was happening. I bought the systemic stuff to be prepared, and even set a reminder in my Outlook calendar to be sure to put the stuff out around the beginning of May. Of course, I never did it. I thought (mistakenly) that I was going to be fortunate enough to be bypassed by them this year. But no such luck. I think they were just late this year. At the first sign, I put the systemic product out, and although I still see some JBs near the tree and on some of my flowering plants near it, the leaves are still hanging in there, and mostly looking okay. The product is supposed to provide a year's worth of protection against a variety of insect pests. I don't know what the negative affects might be, but seems to me that something systemic will only harm those insects that are trying to eat my plants. However, my Lord Baltimore Hibiscus in the back looks horrible. I tried spraying Liquid Sevin, but didn't really do much good. I'm just waiting until the JBs are gone then I'll cut it back. Does anyone know if it will put out new growth this year if I cut it back? Haven't seen one single bloom because of those nasty bugs. ~Angie

I have *never* heard of an earwig biting someone! I foudn this: "The name "earwig" derives from a false European superstition according to which these insects enter the ears of sleeping people and bore into the brain. In fact, earwigs rarely bite--usually when sat upon or handled--and their bite is only mildly painful." http://www.entomology.wisc.edu/ppearwig.html Earwigs eat an omnivorous diet of other insects and plants. This diet can be beneficial: earwigs feed on aphids, mites, fleas, and insect eggs. Unfortunately, in gardens they munch on dahlias, marigolds, lettuce, potatoes, and hostas. Awh heck .. there is still lots of room in the two Kayaks for at least two or three more hosta , maybe more. . I think you maybe need a pick up truck or even a little trailer to tow. So funny. I went to buy some beautiful hanging baskets while on a holiday with out camper but they were too big to fit in the camper door so had to get back my $$$

Great story, almost hooked. We actually carry the dimensions of our camper door and of the shower cabinet and the clearance under the table... Seems like every year we are bringing back things for the garden and we end up not showering for a bit too long...

This is Janann and Sheila leaving our house this afternoon... and the kayaks were already fully packed with camping gear and... rocks... from the camping trip. They were like kids in a candy shop - and didn't really think how much room that many plants would take!

So funny about the rocks too! We( or maybe it was me) brought rocks in the compartments of the motorhome all the way from Arizona to British Columbia Canada Not little ones and some so heavy I could hardly lift them. Murray said the fuel mileage was way down from all the weight. Never smuggled hosta although I wanted to. All for making a beautiful feature in the yard . Toes in picture gives some idea of size lol

LOL! Oh we knew how much room they would take. We just know how to pack. We really had room for one or two more. Darn that we didn't look around quick and add a couple more. :) And we should mention that we were bringing back plants for two other people too. :) And we won't get back until next year, so we had to make it worthwhile. :) I think we should all meet at Jim's next year for a hosta forum get together. I will bring the cookies! What do you think Jim?

By the way, we had so much fun at Jim's and his garden's are gorgeous! I will try to put photos up in the next couple of days, but it might be a bit longer. Next week is RAGBRAI here in Iowa.

I'd lay in a case of champagne if people are willing to come. We love garden parties and garden tours... my only real problem is telling which stories I've told which people...
