Moonflower leaves turned white post transplant-

I started my moonflowers from seed indoors in pete pots.

I moved them outdoors last saturday transplanting them into

30" window box containers filled with potting soil. The

seedlings already had a few mature leaves and were about

3-5" long. As of Sunday evening I noticed some white

spotting on the leaves and it has only spread. I'm afraid

my poor moonies are doomed.

I was looking for some advice and causes.

Overwatered on transplant?

-I drenched the soil post transplant

Toom much sun, too soon?

-I moved them on Saturday into direct sun from indoors

on a hot day.

I think the problem is too much sun too quickly, that the leaves are scorched. If you can move the window boxes to a place where they will get at least 1/2 day of shade for awhile and they should recover.

Same thing happened to mine when I put them outside. Initially I set them outside for a couple hours each day, but a few of the days were rather hot. They've been outside for about a month now and other than a few white leaves, my Moonflowers appear to be very heathy. Matter of fact, I'm even getting some buds.

Just this past weekend, I decided to transplant the entire 5" pot of Moonflowers into a larger pot. So far, it seems to be doing well. Again, not knowing very much about gardening, I used regular topsoil. I thought I read somewhere that they do not like rich/fertilized soil. Any thoughts on the type of soil I should use, or (should have used)? I'm keeping my fingers crossed, because they really look healthy!!!

Here's a picture of the plant (sorry for the terrible resolution I used my phone). After doing some quick skimming it looks like the most likely cause is that I burnt the leaves. Seems odd though since it was is only about 68 in the house so the sun wouldn't have "baked" them in the traditional sense.

Mine got a little sunburned, too. Its tough to harden off, though, when you work full time. I was faced with working all weekend followed by a week of forcasted rain. They would not get much natural sun for a week if I didn't start then, and would still have been set back. I was hoping with temps still not too high they would be ok, but a few leaves got nipped and turned a little white. Hopefully they will be ok. The later it gets before they harden off and get into the garden the more the risk that they will have to endure our first heat wave soon after going into the garden. As long as I work full time and mother nature doesn't cooperate, hardening off is going to be tough. At least I don't work nights and have to worry about not being there to take themn in if a sudden frost threatens. Sue

I haven't had the problem with tomatoes that you're having (and I'm having with peppers this year), even last year when it was so cold and rainy in May (and June) they didn't sunburn in July. All I can say is that I've got my little peppers back in the house while the tomatoes are camping out in the garage to at least get used to colder temps overnight. I plan on putting them out tomorrow if we have any non-rainy periods (I didn't today), and once it gets sunny again will start exposing them slowly to the sun - could take more than another week to harden off if all this week is cloudy. Since yours are already in the ground, just try to give them some shade on the sunny days, gradually expose them to more sun each day just like you would during hardening off. The sunburnt leaves won't turn dark green again but given good soil the new leaves should be fine. Are you getting new growth?

Hi, when you say that the leaves "turned white" what do you mean? I ask because I have some moonflowers that are growing very prolificly, but have almost like scorched spots on some of the leaves. I wanted to make sure this wasn't a disease or an infestation but I've searched and searched and not found anything except the 4 Lined Plant Bug, but I can't find pictures of what they do to the plant. I'm hoping it is just sun scorch. Have any of you tried spraying your plants with an insecticide or fungicide? If so how did it react? I'm afraid to damage the leaves. Thanks!

these spots just appeared. I am wondering about Sun scorch. Was cloudy when I placed it then we had a sunny afternoon. Moved to shader spot. Would love to hear other opinions.
