Turn a Forgotten Space Into a Place with Purpose

Do you have a catch-all room? You know the one. It's the space that never sees the light of day. The door remains closed at all times and you gasp in horror at the thought of someone opening it. Save yourself the embarrassment and clear it out, now.
These rooms exist for a number of reasons usually having to deal with a recent transition. You may have moved into a larger home or had a child leave for college. Whatever the situation, do not ignore empty space. In an interview with designer Janell Beals, she made a simple, yet profound statement: "In fine art negative or empty space is given as much attention as filled space. When making decisions about how to decorate your space, don't be afraid to leave areas empty, knowing they also play an important role in the design of a room."
I immediately thought of revamping these catch-all rooms into mini museums. Before you dismiss the notion, examine these options:

I immediately thought of revamping these catch-all rooms into mini museums. Before you dismiss the notion, examine these options:
Are you photographer, or know someone who is? Have the photographs enlarged and transferred to canvas. This is a great way for you and others to admire your work!
It doesn't take much to give this room museum quality. A graphic rug, two benches, and well lit artwork complete the look.
Mix artwork with sculptures. Elevating sculptures with pedestals makes your museum look intentional. Tall plant stands are great low cost options.
There are three pieces of art in this image-the painting, the vase, and the sideboard. When the display is kept at a minimum, the eye can easily focus on the beauty of each piece individually.
When you think about it, museums are quite sparse. The reason is to direct full attention to the artwork on display. Simple groupings create more impact when they don't compete with its surroundings.
Avid traveler? Why not gather a collection of similar items for a striking display. This wall unit gives a collection of wooden bowls the spotlight it deserves.
Original works like this have no problem standing alone.
Put you accomplishments on display. Sitting in this room after a tough challenge will help to remind you that you are a conquerer!
Make your collection appear more important by placing it against a bold backdrop. The white pieces really pop against the red wall while the wooden vases balance the look by adding warmth.
Don't own any art? Head to a local thrift, antique store, or estate sale to discover lost treasure. This collage of traditional frames look fantastic against exposed brick.
Is this an option to consider? What items would you display?
