Tomato leaves turned white after transplant

I planted Thurs and checked Saturday (yesterday).

Some of them the tips turned sort of light but the Rutgers - wow! The whole leaf turned whitish with some of the veins still green. I'll go back out today and see how the rest are doing.

Not sure if I should pull the Rutgers and buy more?

The soil is clay and the guy that tilled it for me did a crap job. Let me with golf ball sized rocks basically. That has made it hard to plant.

So I did put a some peat, a little manure with a bit of fertilizer in the the hole and then sort of chopped it all in. Maybe too much?

did you harden your plants before installation? they should recover in time.

The plant wasn't used to strong light and got sunburned. Perhaps a bit of windburn as well.

Sun scald. Where they well hardened off before transplanting? If so, usually the plant will adjust with time and while you may lose those leaves the plant itself should be ok. If not then you need to protect it for a few days with some shade and wind protection. Dave

If whitish, it could be sunburn. That shouldn't happen unless the plant suddenly got much more sun than it had been getting -- for example, if you put an indoor seedling out in full sun without acclimatizing it gradually. Or if you'd had weeks of overcast, then suddenly a cloudless day. Or if you moved the pot from where it was getting only a few hours of morning sun to the middle of the unshaded patio. If the leaves are yellow-green, that's called "chlorosis," and it matters whether it's the bottom leaves (which won't live forever anyway) or new growth. If the veins are still green, it's "inter-veinal chlorosis." It may be due to nutrient deficiency, which is sometimes brought on by too much rain. I don't grow tomatoes in containers, but I understand that they need fertilizing more often than in-ground plants because nutrients wash out the drain holes (essentially the same thing as too much rain). A third possibility is leaf miners. Are you familiar with those? They're tiny insect larvae that eat the middle layers of the leaf. Some leave obvious tracks, others may hollow out the entire leaf. Just remove the affected leaves; don't compost them.

Same boat here. I put half of mine out two weeks ago and the other half last weekend. I hardened them off for at least a week but when I put them in the ground they got a little yellow on me. I think it's just them adjusting to the outside world. The ones I put out two weeks ago are started to develop lots of new green leaves over the past few warm days, so I think they're okay. I also think it was a bit cold for them when I first put them out (I'm near the lake) and it took some warmer weather to get them growing. Mike

Yes, bought them in a nursery, they spent a couple days on the back porch so I think that part was good.

I think it takes more than two days to harden off properly, especially if it came from inside a greenhouse. It will most likely recover.

Sorry but that isn't hardening them off. Now if they were outside at the nursery and had been for 10 days to 2 weeks they they were hardened off. If you bought them indoors in a nursery then they were not hardened off and you have to do it all at home before planting them out.

As Terry said, they should recover given enough time but they will be set back by 2-3 weeks and they will lose all the scorched leaves on the plants.

Yes, you already said that once before above. The point we are trying to make, apparently unsuccessfully, is that isn't enough.

It is very windy on the site. 2-3 weeks? Wahh! Didn't make it out there today (this would be so much better if it was in my backyard but its a community garden plot).
Will see how the other ones are looking.
Though I planted some other things, the tomatoes are the only thing that really matters.

Mary,

Tomatoes, peppers and any plants grown indoors need to be hardened off before they are planted out.

Mine got a little sunburned, too. Its tough to harden off, though, when you work full time. I was faced with working all weekend followed by a week of forcasted rain. They would not get much natural sun for a week if I didn't start then, and would still have been set back. I was hoping with temps still not too high they would be ok, but a few leaves got nipped and turned a little white. Hopefully they will be ok. The later it gets before they harden off and get into the garden the more the risk that they will have to endure our first heat wave soon after going into the garden. As long as I work full time and mother nature doesn't cooperate, hardening off is going to be tough. At least I don't work nights and have to worry about not being there to take themn in if a sudden frost threatens.

Sue - don't feel bad, I'm home all day and with all this rain I'm having a hard time getting things hardened off (and other things planted). My tomatoes were out almost all day Mother's Day in the shade on the NE side of the house, but got a few "freckles". Got them out for a few hours yesterday when it wasn't raining but don't think they'll go out today. This weekend will be tough for me - hot and sunny and I'm gone all day Sat so they'll probably stay in the house rather than trust DH with them.
