Papou's Liberty - One Year Later

July 26th was his birthday. How are all your Papou's Liberty Hosta growing? Mine is doing well, although the deer did chew on a couple of the leaves.

We lost him on the 31st. Hard to believe a year has passed already. Therese if you are reading this I trust you and your family are well, enjoying the garden room you had added on and the beautiful gardens.

Thank you, hostarhodo, for starting this thread. I recently went to Papou's site once more to see his magnificent hostas. Here is my "Papou's Liberty," planted one year ago on July 26.

Here's mine. It's a one-year-old and it has a memorial tag for our hosta friend Papou.

His garden looks like an arboretum! Absolutely gorgeous, perfectly designed, rich mix of color and of course such grand sizes on all his plants! I would have loved to see it in person. Thanks to pieter and pammie for the links. I now have bookmarked his collection. What a wonderful talent and artist he was and clearly an inspiration to all forum members who followed his work and/or knew him personally.

Wow. It's been a long time since I've been on the forums here and Dave's Garden. It was an e-mail I received from Foxfire that led me to look for something on DG where I found sanannie's note about dear, sweet Papou's passing, which absolutely breaks my heart. I have spent a while now here reading through all of these threads with the kind thoughts and special memories so many of us have of Papou and his hostas. I, too, have fond memories of my short visit with Papou, Therese, and Brenda (wholyhosta). It seems that I was one of the fortunate ones that got to meet him in person, and it was a delightful visit! He and Therese were on their way back home from Florida. There are quite a few hosta nurseries in my area, so he had contacted me to set up a stop here in North Carolina to meet me and acquire some new hostas to take back home. Brenda drove up from Georgia to participate in the fun! I have a Liberty and Choo Choo Train in my hosta bed that were gifts from Papou that day. We got them at Hosta Farm, which is no longer in business. I am going to move those hostas both to a more prominent location and change the names to remember Papou. I know that Papou has a special place in Heaven, and I look forward to seeing him there one day. Angie

Eric, Please give your dad a message from me....I've told him more then once how much I've enjoyed his website. Well, today it was his website that gave me the info that I needed to tell the difference between an Aug Moon and Richland Gold. Several times the "LEAF INDEX" on his website has helped me ID some of my NOID's. Just wanted you to let him know, OK? Papou, Eric, Therese and the entire family, My dad went Home to be with his Lord on July 13, 2003. Dad was born in Canada. Papou, every time you would post it would bring back such pleasant memories of my dad. When dad passed from this life into Life Everlasting, I planted a beautiful yellow Mt. Diasen seedling I had raised. I named it Coronation Day in honor of his Homecoming. I am placing a Liberty next to it in honor of your Homecoming and being set at liberty from pain and sickness. Papou, you will be greatly missed. Thank you for all you shared over the years. I pledge to pray for especially for Therese and also your entire family untill your reuniting with them. I was given Liberty in the fall of 2008, but I think of it as Papou's Liberty. Mine's already 4-5 eyes and is in a perfect spot to be seen as you walk across my bridge. I'm so glad Papou's site is still there. Nance

I, a quiet lurker for over 10 years was very touched by Papou. His enthusiasm and knowledge was very charming, I got my Liberty this year and planted at the beginning of a walkway nearby my pretty June. Happy Birthday Papou!

I am sorry to hear about Papou. I found his website in 2007 and his work inspired me to create my own Garden Wonderland. Liberty is a shining beacon within my backyard garden and I am dedicating it to his memory.

I don't post a lot but I did plant one for him last year. His web site is wonderful I love to look at it in winter when you can't see anything other than snow on the ground, reminds you of things to come.
Also when purchasing plants I always look on his site to see if he has a heart by it. Some I have purchased just because he has a heart by it.

My Liberty is still in a pot, waiting to be planted. Just got it this year. Papou inspired me to get out and count my hosta eyes in the spring to have a comparison to the previous year. Great idea! When I'm considering a new hosta, I look it up on Papou's site and see how it looks once it gets its "legs."

We still think of you, Papou...

I hope this helps to explain why we loved Papou, he was a gardener and a great friend and teacher to all of us. We planted his favorite "Liberty" on his birthday July 26 and sent cards and all messages of concern and friendship on here(Must have been around 100)were read to him by his family. They responded and said that it brought him great joy to hear from us. He passed away from Cancer on July 31, 2009. We celebrated his birthday with him and Liberty reminds us of the inspiration he was to all of us.
