tring to find names of this kind of tree. 2 foot wide and 60 foot tall. probably a maple acer ????

There's a popular sweetgum cultivar that gets to about 3x60' called Slender Silouette

There are numerous narrow, columnar forms of various maples, as well as the Liquidambar mentioned previously. However, maintaining a spread of only 2 feet over the life of the tree is very unlikely -- all will expand with maturity to anywhere from 6-15', sometimes more.

Thanks everyone!, Bboy, which is a small species of Alnus. I've seen a couple growing around here, but I've no idea which species are they. They are quite young. I like the Betula trunk color! Dibbit, I'll see if I can find the narrow form of Sweetgum, seems interesting Quercus, Resin and Lucky, thanks. I'm not a fan of Populus nigra, I prefer Populus alba, which grows very well around here. I'mnot sure if English oak will grow here. By the way, I meant to say small trees, that are quite narrow, not strictly a columnar cultivar. Trees with unique bark, leave color, structure...but that remain quite small compared to Quercus shumardii, Populus fremontii, etc. I was also thinking in Liriodendron chinense and Aesculus californica. Thank you....looking at pictures I believe you are right. So now what? Obviously they were planted in the wrong place....under wires and too close to the building. Is it appropriate to do the hedge trimmers trim? Or will that just promote more tip growth at the expense of interior structure? Maybe I should just wait until my time on the board is up and let the next person handle it... Thanks for any advice! Linda C

At this site (http://www.fs.fed.us/database/feis/plants/tree/liqsty/all.html) nearly half-way down the long page it states: "GENERAL BOTANICAL CHARACTERISTICS : Sweetgum is a large, native, long-lived, deciduous tree that reaches heights of 50 to 150 feet (15-45 m) at maturity [6,14]." Under Regeneration processes, it states: "The tree begins to produce seed when 20 to 30 years old, and crops remain abundant for 150 years." This 'eHow' article (http://www.ehow.com/info_8406758_long-sweet-gum-trees-live.html) states: "Because sweet gum live upward of 400 years, careful placement of a newly planted sweet gum is paramount." Perhaps you speak from first-hand experience observing them in a particular part of the U.S., or this is how they stack up in suburban lots? Richard. P.S.: Original poster - there's only one sweet gum tree, but there is also a black gum tree, and a 'water tupelo.' They aren't even in the same genus as sweet gum, but if 'gum trees' are of interest to you, thought I'd mention them.

"Sweetgums are mostly bare in my part of TN" Varietal/provenance differences are notable here. I've been watching one that appears quite hardy and consistently colors a good red in mid-October, well ahead of just about every other sweetgum I see. Moraine is another one that colors relatively early and is probably the hardiest of all. Seedling trees are variable, many still have leaves hanging on that "turned crispy" after a hard mid-Nov freeze (upper teens). Happidaze and Rotundiloba leaves are a semi crispy mix of green and brown. Here's Rotundiloba (photo taken today):

FOUND COLUMNAR MAPLE 2-3 FOOT WIDE 60 FOOT TALL, CALLED ERECTUM, FROM COLONIAL NURSERY IN BLUE SPRINGS MISSOURI.TRYING TO LOCATE A GROWER, THERES ONE GROWING NOW IN FRONT YARD OF A HOUSE IN WARRENSBURG MISSOURI AT HOLDEN AND SOUTH STREET, GOGGLE MAP WORKS THERE.

The unusually narrow maple is 'Newton Sentry'. 'Erectum' is one of its synonyms. It has also been called 'Columnare', 'Sentry', and 'Monumentale' - but other maple cultivars have also been called by those last two names. Be sure to verify stock is the desired one before purchasing.

I doubt the columnar sweetgums on the market will remain as narrow as this, not even columnar Swedish aspen is as extreme in growth habit.

That's one narrow tree in Warrensburg. I've seen one as narrow but not as tall and growing in a lot of shade - Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. I know a nursery in Ontario that carries one of the narrow selections and ships to the States. Email me if you don't find anything and I'll give you the info. And it just dawned on me - there's a nursery on the West Coast that carries what they call Monumentale - Whitman Farms and they have a website.

Have you really got a use for a tree this narrow? It seems like some nurseries order them once and can never get rid of them and they discount them heavily.
I'm curious to know how you found a use for them since they can look kind of silly planted in the open, imo and if the squeeze is that tight where you want to plant it such as in between homes then chances are the roots can be a problem with foundations.
