Certainly looks like my Guacamole. You should have fragrant white flowers soon.

My Guacamole is just now scaping. It is earlier than it's origin plantaginea. Yours look like G. It has lovely variegation. Mine gets more sunlight than I'd like and the two greens are not so distinct.

NC, yours looks young, so it may not bloom this year. I'm in zone 8 in Texas and my Guac is on the last of the blooms. Other fragrants are still sending up scapes, but Guac is about finished.

My Guacamole is a little unstable (streaky and reverting to Fried Green Tomatoes) and looks exactly like yours.

When DonB takes a look, he can show you one of his 16 Guacamoles. He's the champion of the Guacs! :)

I lost mine which was leaping this year, and replaced it with a youngun that is only now flowering. Hmmm, don't think it has the scape showing in this picture though.

I'm on the road so don't have any pics at my disposal; I love that border on your plant's leaf NCnative. So bold and streaky. LOL Mocc 'Champion of the Guacs' am I? Well, feels good to be champion of something! You flatter me : )

I'm going to be passing by my Denver retailer this afternoon, where I got most of my Guacs...I can always squeeze just ONE more in the yard somewhere, eh?

lykaon and dave - brace yourself for my periodic lecture - you hit one of my pet peeves - the term "reversion" - which I believe should be stricken from garden language.

Guacamole is a sport from Fragrant Bouquet, which is a light green with a cream margin. Fragrant Bouquet is a cross between Fascination - a streaker that is a cross between two other streakers - and Summer Fragrance, a deep green with white margin.

So how in the heck could Guacamole "revert" to an all green plant. How can it "go back" to a plant that has, as far as we can tell, never been in the family line... at least for four previous generations?!

when they tissue cultured Guacamole they got a lot of not-true-to-type plants... many all green and some all yellow. Instead of throwing them them away, they named them Fried Green Tomatoes and Fried Bananas and sold them. In this case, not a bad idea... good foundation plants... nice neutral coloring to use with some of the more dramatic fragrant plants.

Guacamole is pretty variable... which is why we have Stained Glass and Cathedral Windows and and and...
The margin will streak and vary... without actually being something I'd call a sport.

Guacamole will also sport to an all-green sometimes. That green typically looks like Fried Green Tomatoes. Whether it is identical or just similar would require a genetic test, but most hosta folks are comfortablere with the fact that people will call it Fried Green Tomatoes. (I'm resigned to this... though I'll bet some of these end up lighter or darker or smaller leafed or larger leafed... there isn't just one way to sport...)

Oh sure. Cash crops are great, I'm sure. It's legal in Colorado, sure. The Feds don't really like this state law, though. They don't recognize it as being valid, either. They like to repeat that when they roll through here, too. Oh well. A good subject for another forum, I'm sure.

Jim, I have a plant that sported from a 'Guacamole'. It LOOKS extremely similar to 'Fragrant Bouquet'. I'm taking your sound reasoning and using it to my advantage, also. I'm going to name it! If Zilis can have his 'Wheaton Blue', I'm naming THIS plant something else, too! LOL (Just for the garden.)

Decided today that I need a 2nd Fragrant Bouquet, from a different source than my first one. Actually, I bought two in spring 2012, potted them together, and they look about the size of one. Not very big. So, time to check out the way one grows from another place.

FB is a major player in the fragrant hosta field, so having two is always a way to stay backed up. Have you taken a look at the "Progeny" of FB in the MYHOSTAS.BE? It can sport fine, but it is also serving as PP (Pod Parent) for a lot of hosta. Leave the scapes on this one, don't cut them off. And leave something nearby for the cross. Two fragrants do not necessarily make a NON fragrant hosta, I learned.

FB was HOTY for 1998. Among its sports that I have are of course (your) Guacamoles, Fragrant Dream (HUGE), Miss Saigon, Mardi Gras, Showtime, Sweetie, So Sweet. I wonder if BKAy has FB to go with her So Sweet?

I'd like to have Clean Lines, fragrant or not, it has the genes for making fragrant seedlings, right......and then I'd like to have Color Parade too. That's just from the FB gene pool, not counting the other fragrants originating with Mama herself as a parent.

Don, hope you have a whole pot load of seedpods on your fragrants when all the blooming is over. How exciting it will be. No rest for you this winter I bet.

That would be awesome beyond my highest expectations, Jim. I hope it does something like that, too.

Mocc, haven't named the little fellow yet. It survived a late freeze, it was frozen to the ground and lost all it's leaves; Came back like a champ, so maybe something alluding to it's hosta-toughness, 'Frozen Fragrance' or something like that. It'll probably come to me in my sleep, or in the middle of a workday. Lots of ideas come to me that way. I'll save the scapes on any plants that are successful pod-makers this year. I already happen to have some growlights I bought last year. Hm, what a coincidence. Maybe I'll set 'em up in the near future. ; )
