Acer Palmatum not thriving

We have an Acer Palmatum planted on our north side yard which receives part sun/shade. It has been in the ground for three years. In the spring when that tree breaks dormancy the leaves are beautiful and the tree looks healthy. By mid-summer the leaves turn crispy and brown and many fall off.

Can anyone recomend a soil ammendment or an organic treatment to correct this problem? We also have a pink flowering magnolia with the same problem.

We are in So Cal, zone 9.
