the day has finally arrived....

tomorrow I will begin planting a portion of my Japanese Maple collection into the 16-inch square redwood planting boxes I have been constructing over the Summer.

I have 11 planting boxes ready. All my soil materials are ready. The planting boxes will be spaced about 3 feet apart. They are in a curved line that runs just outside my back door and a few of them will run into my bamboo grove.

Most of my maples are 1 gallon size but a few are in 3 gallons. I have been working on getting this whole project to come together for some time. Tomorrow I will see it for real instead of just in my mind's-eye. I am pretty excited.

So approx. half of my collection will be in these planter boxes. And I still have lots of lumber left.

Sounds fun, what did you build the planters out of?
I need to build a large one for a 5' waterfall viridis.

Thanks Dan! I've been thinking about an augur. I wonder if I had someone come dig post holes big enough for 4x4's and then cement in the hoophouse ground posts? So even if they couldn't dig down very far, at least I'd have all that cement weight holding things down. Would that work?

Hi All, This is my first year wintersowing. Last year doesn't count because I just threw a bunch of seeds in a prepared container thinking that this Wintersowing thing doesn't work. Was I surprised. When Spring rolled around and I had seedling popping up. Of course, I didn't know what the seedling were because I had gotten the seeds at a garden get-together and didn't bother to write it on the container. Right now, I've got several thing sprouting in NC - eyeball plant, black poppies, soapwort and portulaca. All of these seeds came from various seed swap here on GardenWeb. So thanks all for making this a successful Winter Sowing year for me!

Mike, I am so glad you finally received your much awaited for datura! Love the variegation! It looks like it is a single white flower??? Please keep us updated on its growth with lots of pictures. Are the brugs you planted outside in sunken pots or in the dirt? That is a LOT of brugs to get planted! I am glad Tehya is doing well!!! Great job, good choices, uncluttered and fresh. I wouldn't paint the little demilune in the foyer, but I would hang a very tall mirror just a bit narrower than the table. It not only gives you a place to check your lipstick on the way out the door, but throws light back into the room, and opens up the wall to increase the sense of spaciousness. Now that I have seen the whole room, I like the lamp I showed you on the other post even more in the scheme...but since you have a small table to put it on, you might consider something like this floor lamp to furnish the corner and put the light where you need it without taking up space on the table where you want to put down a drink or a book... Until I take some pix, you will have to visualize.
Cultivars in line so far....butterfly, crimson queen, coonara pygmy, sekimori, crimson queen, shindeshojo, ao shime, koto no ito.....all turning colors....looked real neat around sunset yesterday. I still have more to plant out.

My planting boxes this time are made of 2x6 redwood. The sides that show are sanded. Each box is approx 14 inches tall and 16 inches square. This planting box size is good for my maples, some of which weep quite dramatically, but none of my trees is more than 3 feet tall. With a taller tree, you would have to account for symmetry between box & tree. Fortunately maples are slow-growers, so these boxes should be visually pleasing for some time to come.

It is an absolutely gorgeous day here today, one that would be fine for planting some maples BUT here I am at work AND the arrival of daylight savings makes it impossible to do anything outside after I get home from work. DRAT!

A'course it is light now at 6:15AM just in case I felt like working on this before I leave for my job????? Not likely.
