The green wave has FINALLY arrived!!!

We are on our fourth day of sun, and highs in the upper 40's, so I decided to check those containers again, and was pleasantly surprised to find sprouts.

Here is what has germinated:

Lettuce, Nevada - this one looks like it has been up for several days, there are at least 30 sprouts in there!

Lettuce, Simpson Elite

Arugula

Chrysanthemum, Primrose Gem

Wallflower, My Fair Lady

Of course the forecast is calling for a return of winter weather by tomorrow night, but I'll enjoy the sunshine while it lasts.

Congrats! It's here too - tiny sprouts of Prairie Smoke and feverfew (thanks pit!), and mini cauliflower. Now I'm sorry I didn't sow more.

But there are still at least 3 more weeks of winter .....

I think it's really starting to hit at my house. This is what I have sprouted so far: Lettuce Spinach Bachelor's buttons (3 containers) Jolly Jester marigolds (2 containers) I see action on some of my MGs and on my California poppies; I can see little split seed capsules with roots moving into the soil, but no sprouts yet. They're going to be up soon, though! The soil was frozen solid this morning (temps down to 27 last night) and my marigolds hung in like champs! Just today I cut some quarter-sized holes into the spinach and lettuce lids to start hardening them off; I'm guessing the lettuce will be ready to plant out in 7-10 days.

My cutting has done well since last fall and is now a small plant with four growths of which the largest is 20" long. I have my plant in a 2.5" plastic pot with an open mix of soil, perlite and pebbles instead of the usual bark. I water my plant one or more times a week and it dries completely before I water again. I think this plant would be easier in each growers own potting mix, one that dries out quickly. I can't imagine growing this one in the mix that most Exotic Angle plants come in. Mike

Thanks all. I have a stash of fabric swatches from previous projects and found great fabric to cover the chair seats -- cream (same color as settee) and the same green that's in the rug, in a pattern that echoes some of the shapes in the rug. Today while I'm waiting for the table delivery I'm going to take down the old valances and maybe see how I like the room with naked windows....but I have a feeling I will end up doing fabric roman shades once I find the right fabric.

Peas are done. There were very few immature pods, and the plants were yellowing, so I yanked them up and got the rest of the pods. Not a bad harvest (Super Sugar Snap) over the last couple weeks, but it reminded me that the low yield of peas is barely worth the effort. Broccoli is toast. Between the heat and the striped worms, although I harvested all but one of the primary heads, and they were great, and the saltwater bath only brought a few worms out. The secondary smaller shoots were infested to the point where they were mostly inedible, but at least I got the primary heads before they really took hold. Thought about trying to baby the plants through and see how they did, but I almost think I'm better off yanking them, using that spot for something else, and then starting more seeds in July for a fall crop. My first planting of sweet corn is about 3' tall now, and the Trinity plants are just showing some tassels. Planted 4/30. Pole beans are blooming despite the weird curling and cupping of the leaves. I have harvested a couple peppers. Tomatoes have many green fruits, nothing ripe yet. I have a San marzano that is close. Yukon Gold potatoes are almost died back. The Purple Majesty plants are just yellowing a bit. Sweet Potatoes are plodding along, seem to be taking off of it now. Pumpkins and watermelons growing like mad, no fruit set yet. Zucchini has a single fruit set so far. onions are bulbing. I have watered, and we did finally get 3/4" of rain yesterday, (a moist upcoming weekend looks promising as well) the first decent rain of June. Still plenty of subsoil moisture thanks to the wet May, so trees and shrubs are fine, but I have had to water the veggies and flowers a bit .

Hmmm ... I sowed two kinds of feverfew. I may have to search around for those jugs tomorrow and see if there are any sprouts in them.

I have a friend that is interested in learning about wintersowing, and I think I might sow some tomatoes with her later this week. I just love getting a chance to share wintersowing with folks, especially people whose eyes don't glaze over when I talk about gardening ... you know, like DH and the kids : )

Hi All, This is my first year wintersowing. Last year doesn't count because I just threw a bunch of seeds in a prepared container thinking that this Wintersowing thing doesn't work. Was I surprised. When Spring rolled around and I had seedling popping up. Of course, I didn't know what the seedling were because I had gotten the seeds at a garden get-together and didn't bother to write it on the container.

Right now, I've got several thing sprouting in NC - eyeball plant, black poppies, soapwort and portulaca. All of these seeds came from various seed swap here on GardenWeb. So thanks all for making this a successful Winter Sowing year for me!

Girlgroupgirl, after 12 weeks of snow cover, I am thankful for the warm spell!

Jdbheartease, I was pretty conservative my first year, because I had my doubts that WSing would work too, but each year I sow more and more.

More sprouts today:

Lettuce, Freckles
Lettuce, Tom Thumb
Golden Marguerite (1 tiny sprout)

I can't wait for that first homegrown salad! Yum!!!

Bonnie, I've got 26 more containers that need to sprout. This weekend I'm sowing more. It's very addicting.

I went outside with a flashlight and checked for the first time. I made it till March without peeking!
No green for me yet but a mess from voles. UGG!

Congratulations! I'm so jealous.I'm looking forward to seeing if my jugs are still out there, right now they are still buried under 2 feet of snow. The forecast says we will warm up to low 50s this weekend. If that happens I will go out and see if my babies survived an entire month plus buried. I sure hope so. I can't wait to see something green.

Three more containers have sprouted today:

Feverfew (I'm not too far behind you, PV)
Feverfew, Virgo
Chrysanthemum, Sunset

I've WS quite a bit the past couple days. All of the tomatoes, several kinds of peas, and some cauliflower. I also indoor sowed the rest of my peppers today. I am so excited about all of the new-to-me varieties of tomatoes and peppers I'm trying this year. I'm hoping for the best batch of salsa EVER!!!

We still have a lot of snow, hopefully this week the jugs will unfreeze from the ground so I can put them all in the same place-got some here,some there,some everywhere!

That's awesome Bonnie! I too am trying a bunch of new types of tomatoes. Last year I had 3, this year I have 16. We are going to have so much fun with the tomatoes this year! I started some inside cuz I got antsy, and will wintersow some this week. Come on Spring!!!

Veggies are awesome, looks like my salad will becoming shortly after yours. Spinach is up can hardly wait for the lettuce. Looks like I better get started on my peppers and tom's this week, I wouldn't want to fall behind.
