Time for GardenGrandma/Grandpa Appreciation Day

I figured I'd start a new thread instead of putting this in one of the ongoing threads, where some people might miss it. While it will be nicer if we could get started earlier, some of us do have to travel a bit, so it might be easier if we had a later start time. Is 10:00 AM good or is that too late?

Since Henrietta requested a head count, we can also use this as a show of hands. I'm a 'maybe' right now (because of the dog situation), but will most definitely try to come.

I'm 90% sure that I'll be there but I might have to bring my children. I hope that won't be a problem.

The only other thing that comes to mind at the moment is that something is preventing good root development. Did you loosen the root balls as you planted? Make sure there were no large air bubbles around the plants? Is it possible you have burrowing animals eating at the roots? You could try digging up a plant or two and examining the roots to see if you could get a hint. And, if they came in pots that were supposed to be biodegradable, I'd dig them up and remove the pots. After this much time the roots should be extending well into the surrounding soil. If they're not, you've identified the problem (although the cause is something else). It IS possible that the daily watering is a problem, but that shouldn't be stunting them quite like this--they'd look a bit more rotten and less like malnourished orphans. If you do have to move, you can keep everything you've bought, and you shouldn't need to buy anything else. But if multiple local people have told you not to move yet, I wouldn't until you've done a test, like removing a plant, putting it in the same soil in a pot in a different place, and watching to see if the sole change of location improves matters. Maybe dig a couple of things up and take some pictures of the roots?

I have attempted to allow all to come and speak civily. If I have done nothing else. Yes I can send out what I recieve and I can even take from everyone else the information they give because it dose make for my benefit as well as dose my information for some. If I held every answer in the book I would not have come to this forum or to any other forum to ask questions or to simply make a statement of my experiance, be it with tomatoes or with a tree. As to those un named who simply can not see past thier own actions in conversations. I post for those who want to try and work as a community here through the true exchange of ideas not through arrogance . that hostility towards new or old ideas and methods makes any thread of knowledge mute to others. I have seen over my fifty years thousands of crops and gardens lost to blights late freezes or other factors including droughts. so Is it a gamble every year you plant? you bet ya. but as gardeners and farmers we go out every year and plant our gardens and fields. and we wait and we harvest from our toils. Is my way the only way out there as we can plainly see it is not. dose it make me a better gardener or farmer if I make no effort to allow others to give to me knowledge of some kind towards a different idea in gardening no it dose not. But to jump up and treat people the way I have been treated by some in this post may amuse some but with it comes the loss to others who really are thirsting for knowledge. to that end for those who really want a civil conversation please feel free to have one. and please do use the almanac to get if not just the basics for those new to gardening but to those here who truely have the ability to give thier views with out malice. because the only thing I learned from most of you here is you have grown too set in your ways to let in information even if it was just part of what was given in total. I was asked to introduce my self several times and did so including where i live and my experiances including in many of the areas of you here in this post. but instead I recieve a continual out pouring of arrogance from those just wanting to see just how far they can push some one. I can bark back or I can set back and listen to ideas and pick up some new methods including those that may infact make me wonder. If the way you grow your crop works for you by all means share it. it may make some one else actually have a crop or garden that has exceptional yields we as gardeners and farmers pray for three things an early spring with out a freeze, plenty of water, and a great harvest season- long and fruitful. We as a group need to stop the nonsence and try to reach for those goals instead.

My husband went to visit him and asked him for the 3rd time to please stop driving and gambling all of his money away. Grandpa went completely bezerk this time and told him he doesn't want to talk about it anymore. He said we will not tell him what to do and he will drive and now he is even going to gamble away more money. He said he is also changing his will. Then he lunged for him to try to choke him and threw him out. He has loaded guns. This is so awful. We are trying to get him in to see his doctor this week. The nurse said she will call him and tell him something to get him there. Any ideas here of what we should do? We are trying to get medical power attorney and get him some drugs to calm him down. If we have medical power of attorney how will this help? Is the only solution a nursing home? My son thinks we are just delaying the problem and he will still have to go to a NH because he will never give up any control. Please help. We already have financial power of attorney . He needs a pill and not be allowed to give any more money away. We visited a nursing home today and it was an awful one. We think it's sad because physically he can take care of himself pretty good, but if he is mentally unstable it cancels out his good physical condition. geesh Maybe we can give him a pill to control his rage. But how do we get him to take it? Then after he is medicated maybe we could get the car and guns. Then do we need medical power of attorney and financial power of attorney to keep him from spending all his money? It sounds like we need a lawyer. Thanks for ANY help. It is sad that BM's own father feels this way about his child and at the same time it is gratifying to the reponsible party to hear their efforts have not gone un-noticed. I am so glad that grandpa see's things for exactly what they are, Mom2! It is a bittersweet kindof feeling. Sadness that the kids have a deadbeat mom but joy that you and DH arn't the only people on the planet who have noticed.....

So what kind of meanies make one substitute teach on a Sunday morning, no less? Hope you can make it, Christine. I'm assuming that we'll be there for a few hours.

I have stuff that needs to get to Christine. If someone else who is coming to Henrietta's on Sunday is also going to be meeting with her later, or lives closer to her, please let me know. I have a couple of plants that need to hitch a ride.

Not sure if I'll be able to come and stay but I do want to come for a bit (and Henrietta, I'll bring more vinca for you), and I can collect Christine's goodies for her if nobody else is coming this way. She's only about 15 minutes or so away from me.

Oh, Bonnieeeeeee, will you be there? I was given some iris today that I can share with you..and anyone else who wants some - it's yellow and maroon-ish, from what I'm told.

I hope it's ok to break the law since this isn't officially a swap post.

I'd love to have Lynne take Christine's stuff - which I plan to be blue iris, blue aquiligia, and baptisia.

And if anyone is interested in big healthy irises thet I can't remeber what color they are (Bonnie??) I'll pull them out of the compost and bring them. They might be blue, but might be maroonish or purplish.

Lynne, looks like you'll be the holder of Christine's stuff. I'll bring the plants I have earmarked for her. BTW, a whole bunch of my Dianthus Arctic Fire is going to be toast, so if anyone wants them, let me know now.

I'll take some homeless irises as well. I'll put it in my meadow/thug bed, where they can happily multiply away.

I have lots of Persicaria 'Lance Corporal' seedlings - anybody want some? If yes, please send me an email, because I've not been very good lately about checking MAG (meaDOTzickATarbitronDOTcom).

I'm coming and I'd love another Arctic Fire to go with the one I got at the swap. I'm bringing Sensitive ferns and maybe some other surprises but I probably won't get there by 10 am.

SORRY,SORRY,SORRY. Can't make it. Margaret is doing great but just not up to traveling yet. A nice lady came and removed the surplus hosta. We plan on holding open garden later. Watch for news followed by pictures. Steve in Baltimore County.

Hi All: I am back, 10 is fine, you can do anything you want to, after one week of vacation and the rain we had, everything is going hay wire. I'll be prepared. Love you all. If anyone comes later, that's ok too. Swap all you want to, I'll take whatever, and you can take what you might like.
