Cultivar spelling is corrected. Thanks to all that chimed in. In my garden everything has a shelf life. Well for that matter...a few are untouchable. Sooner or later I will determined what stays/goes or what relocates. I don't mean for it to be that way but space is space and you do with it as you see fit. The Acer was only 8-12 inches tall when given to me. That being the case it was planted at the best possible place at the time. In another few years I will move it to another location IF I Have the room. If not I will give it away to some appreciative person that will continue to care for it. Dave

I can't recommend any specific variety as I grow most of my Maples from seed, but I am building a 'Temple'. I can't wait to start landscaping around it. Maples WILL be included, of course. Mostly conifers though. I'm going to bring in soil from other areas on my property as the soil here is thin and poor. I've been pretty busy so the going has been slow, and will probably continue to be slow. I've suffered a lot of damage due to an ice storm a few weeks ago. Thirty year old upright Japanese Maples with nice canopies took the most damage. Mike Under construction

I personally do NOT like high grafted dissectums but how high is the question 10" ok 18-36 " ehhhh??? ..most of the really high ones look terrible IMHO...Most grafters DO NOT match RS to tree ( making them look really stupid for years) and most do both this "non matching" and high grafting to save money and time it's a business ya know "time + labor = $$$$$"..cause you need to stake the tree and do so for many years to keep it from becomming "cousin it ".( which in some cases looks ok if you have the space for such spread aqnd often messiness. Wahtever you do it will still be a weeping dissectum over time a short or tall mushroom or weeping small tree ..NOT an upright.whether the graft is 6" or 48" or 60". I guess if you topiaried and wired it you could train each and every branch to be straghter and a bit more tree like ...bit it would likely look horrible...thus the yearnig by some for these mythical uprights of which a Lionheart is "somewhat" of. I'm guessing it was cheap because it was from Menards. Most people are not going to want a lanky green JM if they're getting them there... they're going to want a standard weeper, or a red upright. So, the oddball trees get left until the end of the year, then Menards just wants to get rid of it. The original price may have been a lowered price printed later in the season, you never know. Good find on your part! My Seiryu is a little taller than yours (8'?) and only started getting bushy recently. Its first three years it just grew up, up, up. I bought it as a 2-year graft (maybe three?), so I'd guess yours is around five to eight years old. They grow quickly at first, then slow down and fill out more. Enjoy it!
