Acer x. acer palmatum 'Seiryle'

No other information on it other then it came from Dax as a seedling about 3 years ago.

Dax any information?

One that I really like for it's lime green color. One you can mix and match with most anything.

Hello, Dave!

what you have on your hands appears to be Acer palmatum 'Seiryu.' This is one of the few upright-growing cultivars of Japanese Maple. It's a pretty common cultivar, but a real winner.

Hello Dave, I agree with Dave. I would label it as a Seiryu seedling. Nice looking plant and apparently a grower. Beautiful garden! Jay

You might want to consider a JM with interesting colored bark for the edge of your deck/patio instead of leaf color. Depending on how much you use your space in spring and fall, a tree with colored bark is pleasing, and rich green in summer. I have trees I grew from seeds of a JM 'Sango Kaku' or Coral Bark Japanese Maple. Of them, one is very dwarf, one dwarf, and one medium, all have colored bark - one more green, one more red and one more coral/yellow. I am sure the real ones are true to the coral color and size but I had fun growing variable ones from seeds and enjoy them in my garden. Supposedly the real ones get 30' tall but in 12 years my tallest mother was 10'. They get multi-hued fall leaf color and the bark color intensifies through late winter, new growth is on coral red twigs with bright leaves. The one advantage these JM's have is that you can prune them whenever you want and they put out even more branching red twigs. They are also on the lower end of prices for JM's. Nancy the nancedar

I've had my Villa Taranto about 4 years. I bought it as a newly grafted tree, grew it in a pot for several years and planted it in the ground last spring. It has been slow growing so far, which I actually prefer because I've planted it in a bed where it hopefully won't get too large. The drought last summer kept it from growing much last year, but it survived. The location is pretty much full sun, and it handles the sun just fine. Full sun also means it keeps the red color in the leaves longer. When it was potted, I had it on my deck, which is shadier, and the leaves would turn green in the summer. In the fall, the leaves turned golden. I have several other linearlobum varieties -- Koto no ito (green), Beni ubi gohan (red), Beni otake (red). I really like them because of their fine texture, like a dissectum, but most don't tend to weep. My VT is only about 18" to 2' tall when fully leafed out. I have seen some larger ones in a nursery (3-4' tall) and they had a more upright form than most dissectum varieties. What I like about VT is the changing leaf color. My favorite linearlobum right now is Beni ubi gohan. It is supposed to be the smallest linear variety, but mine has grown faster than the VT. The new growth is an intense cherry red and it keeps its color all summer long, turning scarlet red in the fall. Koto no ito is also beautiful and reminds me of a miniature weeping willow (it does weep, unlike most linears). Funny, I don't associate Japanese maples with formal gardens -- just the opposite. Most tend to develop very unique and interesting shapes, or you can train them to a particular form. Yeah, it looks like there is too much surface area involved. Better to add the wood shavings than not though. I routinely till in larger woodchips from a tree service and have had no yellowing problems in my ornamental garden for many years. The woodchips break down slowly. I till them in to a soil that is very good to begin with, and haven't used fertilizer for over thirty five years, except for potted stock, of course. Sawdust tilled in is a real nitrogen robber because of all the surface area that breaks down rather rapidly. Your pine chips are very thin and will break down almost as fast as sawdust. You might want to add a little fertilizer to compensate for that. As a good analogy, I was in a bar in rural Montana that had rock salt in shakers with large holes in the cap. When I asked the bartender why rock salt instead of normal salt, he explained that normal salt was like flash powder and dissolved real fast leaving the beer flat. Rock salt dissolved slowly, giving a salty taste with out flattening the beer. My neighbor tills in a lot of sawdust every year in his veggie garden. He adds ammonia sulfate when he tills to help it compost. The added heat provides him with warmer than normal soil and helps his veggies off to a faster start in the Spring. It looks like A.p 'Seiryu'. I have one as well. Did Dax collect seeds off 'Seiryu' and grew one that ended up looking like yours? I wonder if one can hybrid 'Seiryu' with 'Tamukeyama' to produce upright version of 'Tamukeyama' and a 'Seiryu' with the color of Tamukeyama?

That thing is filling in wonderfully. That looks fantastic.

I grew that from seed, from a huge collection of maples, at a residence on the East Coast. Since the collection is so big as well as mature, I labeled everything as just as Dave has it on his tag with the exception that his spelling of the cultivar is not correct. It is 'Seiryu'.

Lou you can cross any 2 palmatums, indeed.

I missed the "seedling" part. Technically and correctly, although D-Steg's tree looks like 'Seiryu,' it should be forever labled and referred to as Acer palmatum 'Seiryu Seedling,' or something of that ilk.

According those who determine such things, a seedling grown Acer palmatum is just known as Acer palmatum - no "seedling cultivar name". You only get to apply a cultivar name when it has been propagated asexually.

That is indeed a lovely specimen but will soon be in major competition with the adjacent tree (magnolia??). Can get quite tall and rather wide in time.

Cultivar spelling is corrected. Thanks to all that chimed in.

In my garden everything has a shelf life. Well for that matter...a few are untouchable. Sooner or later I will determined what stays/goes or what relocates.

I don't mean for it to be that way but space is space and you do with it as you see fit.

The Acer was only 8-12 inches tall when given to me. That being the case it was planted at the best possible place at the time.

In another few years I will move it to another location IF I Have the room. If not I will give it away to some appreciative person that will continue to care for it.

That is a gorgeous seedling. I love that lime green color and the fine textured leaves would really bring a nice look in the garden. It is a show stopper with the hostas that also showcase that lime green color. Very nice!
