Kentucky Coffee Trees (Gymnocladus dioicus)

Hi all, I'm interested in growing these coffee trees as I love legumes but I don't want an invasive mimosia. I read that these are wasy to grow from their beans (seeds) but I'm unsure on where to obtain them. I'm located in Northern Laurel (Scaggsville) Maryland. I heard about one on Laurel Main Street but I haven't seen it and am unsure if it is a female and has seeds. I also heard about some at Mout Vernon in VA. But that is further away than I would have hoped. Does anyone know where I can obtain these seeds, hopfully for free as I only need one or two and am on a budget.

There's the remains of a personal arboretum in Catonsville, and I picked up coffee bean seeds there a few years ago. I didn't know what they were so brought them home to id them! If that's close enough for you, google 'Lurman Woodland Theatre' in Catonsville. There's an open air concert series held in this wooded area in the summer and there will be a sign marking the road. It's either off of Mellor Ave or off of Bloomsbury Ave. The Lurman site should give directions. Turn down the road with the Lurman sign and just park in the little lot and start walking around. It's basically a public park, so you can park and wander and pick up seeds. Many of the trees there are labeled too.

OR....you could trade me for some. I'm live in KY now, but stopped by to read about the MAG swap (am a former Baltimorian, and I miss this swap. We have a nice one here, but no where near as large.)

Let me know what you might have to trade, and I sure can send a bunch for you. Have a tree behind my house, and harvested a good bit of these. (Grow the extras and swap 'em at next years MAG. That would be sweet.) They're large seeds, a little bigger than an almond in the shell.

Yes, we are Sunset 3B here.... The sunshine on most days and temps in summer is the reason so much agriculture grows successfully here. Of course, they irrigate. I am surprised Wenatchee is the same zone as us, but I guess it doesn't take into account the amount of snowfall they get (They are probably the -15f extreme.. we are more like -5f.) RE: the suitability of the trees I listed, The Thornless Honeylocust seems to thrive here, it does well in alkaline soil and is drought tolerant. As a prairie tree, it thrives in full sun. I have noticed many honeylocusts in yards that do not irrigate, growing just fine... The list of negatives of the tree is pretty short, and it seems very adaptable to our conditions. Linden -- RE: irrigating, I don't know. We will have some lawn on the property, so a tree/trees in that area would get more water. Linden tolerates alkaline soil and has small leaves... Thus, it seemed to be an *option.* ash -- I still have to go to our local extension office.. I will ask them about borers here. Ash also tolerates alkaline soil and was another option for my lawn area. If the borers are that bad here, I won't consider it.

I second Kentucky coffee tree. After taking a few years to settle in my tree has grown about three feet per year for the last couple years in a decidedly less then ideal spot. They are awkward as youngsters but great later on. Similar, but with a finer texture is honeylocust. They are more widely availble, almost on the verge of overplanting. Oaks are good to plant under but resent alot of disturbance of their roots. Birches have the advantage of growing quickly and creating a fairly light shade but do compete somewhat with perennials for water and nutrients. Dave, you might not like the answer I offer, but I'd leave it be. KCT is notoriously ungainly in youth and especially in non-leafed-out condition. Despite those factors, it usually shapes up just fine on its own. Not a tree with an especially pronounced central leader-it's cool that you know about the importance of that in many species BTW-it will still do its thing and usually be fine. The tree is too young to worry about, IMHO. +oM

"I have trouble distinguishing branches with leaves, from leaves with leaflets" I look at the attachment point. Typically, where the leaf petiole attaches to a branch, it is wider and has a different structure/form than where leaflets attach to the rachis/central stem of a leaf.
