Bloodgood Japanese Maple
Comments (1)A Japanese maple would not be my first choice for a very sunny position in Georgia but they could work. The foliage will green out some in summer in your sun and intense heat may also pose a factor. Adequate deep irrigation should counteract that. Japanese maple do not have invasive root systems so they should not be a concern with respect to the drive....See MoreAdvice on planting a Bloodgood Japanese Maple?
Comments (4)Planting a Japanese maple is really no different from planting any other type of tree. You want a planting hole that is at least 2-3 times the diameter of the rootball but slightly less deep and with gently sloped sides. Site the tree in the hole so that the root flare (where the trunk begins to spread out into the root mass) is at or slightly above the soil surface. When in doubt, higher is always better :-)) Backfill with the soil removed (no amendments!!) and firm in well. Water thoroughly and mulch well....any amendments you might want to have added can be used as the mulch or topdressing. Just avoid this material from actually touching the trunk. And since it is now nearly summer and not a great time for planting trees, you will need to pay very close attention to watering needs...See MoreJapanese Bloodgood Maple near house?
Comments (39)Assuming it can grow well under your site conditions* the maple will be fine there as long as you are not bothered psychologically by its proximity to the house, or having it drop leaves in the gutters each fall and so on. Or it doesn't become a highway for roof rats (any tree that branches near a roof can provide easy access for these common pests of areas near salt water). 'Bloodgood' is a tall variety growing over 30 ft. high. *You might want to read the discussion under Acer palmatum in the plant encyclopedia section of the Sunset Western Garden Book of growing Japanese maples in arid areas like Southern California...See MoreJapanese Maple — Emporer 1 vs. Bloodgood | Zone 10a
Comments (7)Hey everyone! Thanks for all the advice. Unfortunately, I don’t live near the coast, I’m in Glendale, which is valley. The highest humidity I’ve experienced here was maybe 60% during rain. August can get past 100°F. Is this okay for JM’s? I’ve been providing the Crimson Queen bright shade with a few minutes of direct sun on half of the tree around 2-ish. I guess I should’ve worded that better. I want to get either a Bloodgood or Emperor 1*, air-layer it, and use the resulting clones as rootstock for the Crimson Queen. I want to keep both trees, that’s why I want to air layer to produce more rootstock. I just heard Crimson Queens (or any weeping dissectum varieties) don’t air-layer at all. Is this true? Thanks everyone! *Thanks for correcting me gardengal48!...See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
