Thanks everyone! I wanted them to match because I have placed them side by side to create a screen from my neighbors patio door. I have a Bloodgood next to my front door in a sheltered location. It thrives where it is. After our last winter, so many Japanese Maple trees suffered damage, not one but on this one! Soil was replaced many years ago, so it is in very deep, fertile soil. It puts on at least 2.5 feet a season! I have started a collection of them. So far I have, 2 Bloodgoods, an Emporer I, Azuma Marasaki, Waterfall, Crimson Queen, and a Tamukeyama.

Given your location, it seems the maple should do quite well but the plumeria will need to be brought in for winter :-) There is often a lot of misinformation about the correct naming of Japanese maples. All named forms - cultivars - of Japanese maples are propagated asexually, either by grafting (most common) or by cuttings (less common). All seed grown Japanese maples are just referred to as generic Acer palmatum - no cultivar name - regardless of what the parent plant was. Cultivar names are registered and all reputable growers will propagate correctly with the approved and correctly labeled stock plants. But there are many less reputable sources that will produce maples under other, non-registered names or even by seed. 'Bloodgood is perhaps the most widely propagated Japanese maple on the market and you will often find seed-grown so-called Bloodgoods on the market. They may very well look like Bloodgood but they are not. You may find "dwarf" Bloodgoods included in this somewhat suspicious grouping. Bloodgood is a pretty good sized JM. The typical mature size is often quoted as 20'x20' but Vertrees (THE JM authority) reports a mature height of upto 30 feet. As I stated previously, there is NO dwarf Bloodgood but a good number of smaller growing Bloodgood look-alikes, several of which were sports or brooms from a known Bloodgood. But they are known by different names if properly registered cultivars. Enjoy whatever tree you actually have :-)) I've yet to meet any Japanese maple I didn't like!

"tall and narrowish habit"?? Not so much. In most cases, the canopy spread will equal the height as any image search will confirm. Generally the canopy is described as "rounded and spreading", often in graceful layers. Vertrees describes it as a "broad topped tree". Look at the full tree shot on the Monrovia website - that is classic Bloodgood form. All of this is in aid of an explanation to carefully consider the spacing before planting. It's a little difficult to envision what these little guys will look like in 10-15 years but crowding them too close is not going to produce the best look. Maybe review a bunch of Google image searches to get a feel what an individual tree looks like with a few years on it (and some with even more mature trees with well developed heights and canopies) and extrapolate from that how your spacing may impact appearance.

Hey everyone! Thanks for all the advice. Unfortunately, I don’t live near the coast, I’m in Glendale, which is valley. The highest humidity I’ve experienced here was maybe 60% during rain. August can get past 100°F. Is this okay for JM’s? I’ve been providing the Crimson Queen bright shade with a few minutes of direct sun on half of the tree around 2-ish. I guess I should’ve worded that better. I want to get either a Bloodgood or Emperor 1*, air-layer it, and use the resulting clones as rootstock for the Crimson Queen. I want to keep both trees, that’s why I want to air layer to produce more rootstock. I just heard Crimson Queens (or any weeping dissectum varieties) don’t air-layer at all. Is this true?
