A bit of silliness for some GW regulars...

Well this got hidden in a reply by me over in "Exchanges" and since I REALLY felt dared by the Sweet Suzinnia (yep more adjectives) here are three haiku (and not very good ones I might add) in honor of the three wonderful gardening folks who made certain I'm swimming in seeds I still don't know where I'll start all of... I say, make this a challenge for you all! Let's do some silly garden poetry! Doesn't have to be about specific persons - just about what strikes us right now about our gardens or what we are starting.

Rick "handsome" goes without saying...

Rick, clever fellow

tries all things green and growing

willows lillies grass

Suzi must try it

postage stamp gardens heaving

phlox iris orchids

Julie's seed boxes

if she doesn't have it there

it simply can't grow

Hey, Pam! Here's what I'm thinking. Your VP/drystall is going to be very water-retentive unless you make the Drystall a large fraction of the soil, but let's assume you're not going to use a lot of Drystall, because I know you're leaning toward the VP. First, perlite would probably be a better choice than the drystall because it will be more effective at reducing water retention. Perlite has no internal porosity, so would hold less water than the Drystall - and it's less expensive. If you have more questions in that area, just ask & I'll help; otherwise, I'll leave you to figure out how to deal with the 'making' part of your soil. How to rig your containers to take the most advantage of gravity to help you drain your containers: Hang them by a corner, or from wherever you need to to ensure the container hangs at as close to a 45* angle as you can make it hang. Drill your drain hole in the lowest spot, and insert a wick. This makes the soil that the perched water occupies cone-shaped or pyramidal, and a 6" pyramid or cone standing on its apex holds only about half the soil as a 6" cube. Since the PWT will occupy only (about) half the volume of soil it normally would if the container is level, you'll reduce the perched water volume by half PLUS whatever extra the wick will remove. You'll lose some soil volume because the container is tipped, but that you'll have a much higher % of soil with air i it instead of being saturated, you'll actually GAIN volume in the 'healthy' soil dept. You aren't the only one here trying to escape the mud-in-a-bag you referred to. Many have passed this way and embarked on a path different than that which they arrived on. Agree it's easier to talk about one plant at a time. I'm not a fan of verbal abuse, either, admit it's a cheap, desperate act against a probably innocent plant. Seriously though, I've got the sickness that most plant people have - where one thinks the plants are always thirsty. Assuming the soil is not inappropriate and the roots have room to grow in it, and that light and temp are within acceptable range, gaining control over this compulsion is what enables people to improve most of their plants, or at least not kill them. (A few plants actually like to stay soggy, and not everyone has this defect.) The soil is extremely important and although I'm in complete agreement about texture and moisture, I do things differently than most people (like putting live compost from an open pile in potted plants.) So I encourage people who grow in store-bought ingredients to follow Al's advice. A current thread, What was your 1st houseplant..., is packed with testimonials about plants killed by love in the form of too much water/inappropriate soil. Once you get a good handle on that stuff, almost any plant should thrive in your care. Your only limits would be those out of your control like climate/light level. Ivy and Syngonium (arrowhead vine) can both be grown as dangling trailers, or upright with support of some type. Something fun to think about for plants that have a choice. Do you notice any reddish or pinkish coloring to the veins on your Syngonium. Most I've seen have some. That's all it takes (as if regular green/white variegation isn't already enough) for me to swoon over these. I have one that makes pinkish orange leaves that fade to "plain" green/white as they age. It will be spring before I need to determine if that should be left to hang or given a support to climb. "you'll find yourself concerned with Other people's plants almost as much as your own!" No doubt man! It's terrible when someone gets something interesting going and then disappears. Not only are you worried about them and their issue, you're dying to know what happened. That's rare though. I love watching people's plants grow as they periodically post pics of them. "Again, after repotting, mold will vanish along with gnats." Again, no doubt. And if the new soil is kept too soggy/too often, these problems can return. "...provide the incentive they need to abandon any contrary ways." This cracked me up! How timely, too. A couple weeks ago I got sick of looking at a particularly unhappy potted spider plant and don't really want to unleash more of this thing in the yard, and have given enough of this rampant weed away to start several other infestations already (and I can always dig up more if I find myself with empty pots,) so I put it upside-down on top of a compost pile and kind of pushed it down a bit. Mrsjunque, the hollyhocks died back to ground level (as they are supposed to), and came back again when the weather warmed up this spring. They aren't as tall as last year, but still looking pretty good. Did you give yours enough time to come up again? Jelly, the Joey is a new plant for me, and I'm not sure whether it will self-sow or not. I'm going to have to get back to you on that one, but I will be collecting some seeds myself, if possible. (In case it needs a little help.) If it doesn't come back, I would still buy it again. It adds such a nice look to the bed. I love it. Potter is very successful in his lizard hunting. TOO successful. I'm always trying to rescue them, but he is FAST and deadly. He cornered my black racer the other day, too, and was moving in for the kill, but the snake struck at him, and he jumped back yelping. But before I could reach them, he was heading back with every intention of killing it, but it slipped through the fence and got away, thankfully. I would REALLY have been mad at him if he killed my snake! I'm glad you like where I ended up putting the totem, Karalynn. It is just so pretty out there, with the sun sparkling on it. It makes me smile every time I see it. Laura, I love dachsies so much it isn't funny! They have really wormed their way into my heart, and as exasperated as I get with them at times, they are still making me laugh every day. Thanks, Katkin & Flowerlady. I'm so glad you like the beds. I love your kitchen brianadarnell! Your counters turned out great! You must be excited to almost be finished! I put the tall cabinet where it is because the door from the garage opens into that area. I am actually planning on storing things in there that are NOT used on an everyday basis. I moved the ovens down enough so they could be open and the garage door could still open without a crash! (I have two kids who come in and out without checking to see who might behind the door.) Can I ask if the cabinets on the sides of your sink are symmetrical? I know I shouldn't sweat it, but that was one of my reasons for trying to get rid of the 12 inch upper. Rosie-I never thought of that. I do find the area under a sink to be messy and not that useful. Thanks for a great idea!

*LAUGH* that's funny leaveswave! I'm just glad we are still in escrow - our property taxes just jumped up a big bunch! I look at some of the nicer houses a bit closer to Como Lake and sigh, but then I look at my fantastic wild gardens and my big (tapped and dripping) silver maple - with a kitchen re-do scheduled for spring - I think I'm happy. Home heart and hearth, boiling sap and bulbs through snow, dreaming of new floor.

oh GOSH, peachy....those were the things I rejected as not applicable.
I didn't mention a few others that do apply, cause I couldnt fit them in .....i.e. gentle rounded curves, pretty pinkish hue and you smell nice too!
