Rabbit damage to Japanese maple bark

Hello,

I have a small Japanese maple (Hogyoku) that is about 30 inches tall. This weekend I noticed that a strip of bark had been removed from the trunk, presumably by a rabbit. The missing strip is a few inches long, maybe 1/4" wide. the trunk is about 1/2 inch in diameter there, so the missing strip represents about 1/6 the circumference of the trunk. The damage is above the graft.

Besides doing something to prevent further rabbit damage, is there anything I should do to minimize the chances of complications from this injury?

Thanks for any help,

Alex
