Japanese maple companions - full sun

I love my new Japanese maple, but it's only 3 1/2 feet tall. It will be a long time until it provides shade for anything planted with it! I'm looking for ideas on complimentary plants for full sun. I'd like to do something evergreen, I think. Also, the adjacent bed is all red, white and yellow roses with dwarf blue delphiniums, if that helps : ) the bed itself is about 14 x 6 with the tree in the center. Thanks in advance!!

Where are you and what kind of maple? Hard to provide any meaningful suggestions without these details :-)

It's a red dragon maple, ultimately 10-12 ft tall. I'm in Zone 5, Indianapolis. Thanks!

If it's true that Jap maple doesn't do well in sun there, you must comply. If you doubt that the designer is right, take a cruise around town and observe what Jap maples you can find. What kind of light conditions do they have? You can't give plants conditions they don't like and then expect to like the plant when it doesn't perform well.

@jlcjlr - “decided to try the Fireglow…I’ll be planting one in full sun and one in afternoon shade”. That was back in 2010…13 years ago…curious to know how your Fireglow JM’s are doing now? I’m considering a Fireglow for my property, but I don’t have any mature trees so it would be getting full sun the majority of the day in zone 7A in the mid-Atlantic region. Worried that the leaves would scorch. Also, how is the fall color on them? I’m looking for really bright scarlet red fall color…the kind of red that stops you in your tracks with the sun setting behind it! Thanks…would love to get an update!

I'm located in zone 7A, in Arkansas. I have had some Inaba Shidare in full sun. They did good, but I had to keep them watered, & there was usually some leaf scorch by August. I have moved them to a shadier location, and they are doing much better. I do have a crimson queen, and it seems to handle the full sun pretty well. You might also consider a red dragon. I planted one in my grandparents yard 2 years ago, and it is handling the full sun with no problems. I recently purchased a Mikawa yatsubusa. It is still rather small, so I am leaving it in the container. I have read they do handle sun. So if you decide on one, keep us posted. I would be interested in knowing how it does in our zone and sun. I would avoid the Sango Kaku if you are on a budget. It is a very gorgeous tree, but they are prone to disease. I have had one in my yard for the past 2 years, but actually had to dig it up today, due to the bark turning black from the top down.

Koto no ito Japanese maple companion?

Question. Does anybody have a recommendation for a nice red maple that would compliment koto no ito? I planted koto no ito toward the front of my property last year and now have decided I want to plant a red maple behind it and maybe a 3rd yet to be chosen small tree to its left front (when viewed from the street). Koto no ito is yellow green with very thin leaves so I’m thinking my best choice might be a wider leafed red maple. I’m in zone 6/7NJ and the tree would get no more than 3 hours of direct afternoon sun kinda coming from the back of my property and then about an hour of very late evening filtered light. There’s 16ft of space between my driveway and the lousy sidewalk close to my front porch. It measures 17 1/2ft from koto no itos trunk to the sidewalk. In the pictures, I put an empty black pot on the spot where I think the new tree would go. I’d imagine the new tree would have to be a medium sized tree. I think I’m looking for something that would hold its red color throughout the season. I don’t think I want a common bloodgood, beautiful yes, but, everyone seems to have one. I’ve been thinking about choosing an Atrolinere, Beni otake, emperor1, twonblys red sentinel or fireglow. Or, maybe a large leaved japonicum like Dancing Peacock. Maybe Shindeshojo? But, neither of the last two are red all season. Grrrrrr What tree would make Koto no ito pop out in the landscape? I’ve been researching maples for 3 months now and want to get the design right. I feel like I’m driving myself crazy. I would really appreciate any suggestions that you maple folks might have. Thank you so very much in advance. Dan.

Unless staked, 'Red Dragon' will never get that tall. It is a weeping dissectum - depending on graft location and any vertical staking, the growth habit will be horizontal and cascading, not upward. 5-6' is much more typical.

Generally the mature habit of this tree is in a umbrella or mushroom-shaped form, often with branches that cascade fully to the ground. The only thing I'd consider planting directly under the canopy is some sort of groundcover, preferrably one that will tolerate eventual shade, as that will be the growing conditions faster than you think.

And Japanese maples really dislike any disturbance in their root zone - it can be harmful to the tree as well - so some sort of permanent planting, like a ground cover, is very suitable.

Adjacent to it, you can do anything you want. Dwarf conifers make great companions for JM's and any with a blue-gray tone to the foliage will look geat in contrast to the red leaves. So maybe a Blue Star juniper or a dwarf Colorado blue spruce......?

Thanks for your response. The tree is currently staked & I will be VERY disappointed if it only gets 5-6 feet tall! My landscaper, the nursery & the tree tag all said 10-12 feet. Right now it's growing straight up with 3 small branches forming at the top that are pretty much perpendicular to the trunk. If it spreads out from that point & continues to get taller it might be ok. I may have to think about relocating it.

Weeping dissectums are considered "dwarf" maples and unless staked to grow vertically, they do not. In the opinion of many JM growers, unnaturally staked weeping dissectums look.......ummm.....unnatural :-) They are not intended to be upright trees.

From Vertrees and Gregory, considered the authoritative JM resource, 'Red Dragon's "growth habit is like a more dwarf form of 'Crimson Queen', a compact, well-branched cascading mound, reaching 2.5 m (8 feet) in height. Prefers ful sun and tolerates frosts but needs protection from cold winds and summer drought. Makes an excellent small garden, rock garden, container or bonsai plant".

I would also add that maximum height is highly dependent on the graft location. Low graft trees without staking may never exceed 4'.
