While the poll-mania is at it's highest on this forum, I have a REAL ONE. The situation is: the mankind is leaving this planet, you are only allowed to take 3 (three) hostas with you.

Nobody will listen to : 'It's too hard to choose only 3' or alike. You cannot sneak in # 4 or 5 or tie or whatever. There is no place or time for this.

Can you share with os which ones do you love the most?

I did a lot of trimming and ruminating today. As I was trimming deadened leaves and picking up dropped tomatoes my neighbor came across the swale between our homes and was asking why I bothered so much. He's seen me go through barely walking, 2 hip surgeries and Dennis's issues. He asked what got me out every day to plant, water, trim, deal with life and personal issues then throw it all on the trash heap when nature took a turn. It really made me think, no, not think I spontaneously said to him in a corney kinda way "Cause it's what I do. I love to grow and if it dies I grow it again..." wow, now I really make sense. It's what we DO people. We love it, sometimes we hate it, but mostly WE REALLY LOVE IT! Gardening, no matter what form, large or small, is in our blood. That's why we come here. To brag or cry, to share excitement and promise. It's what we do!! (I now hear Sachmo breaking out in.." I see trees of green, and skys of blue..." it IS a wonderful world, my friends.

I would like to add a vote for the South Beach Diet. I've lost 14 lbs and hubby has lost much more. (of course) This must be an unsettling time for you, I'm sorry your pain. Now you have this major adjustment, not fun at all. The good news is, this board is visited by many helpful and friendly people. I don't post often, but I thought I could help. This blog, www.kalynskitchen.com, is a great resource for low glycemic (won't mess with your blood sugar) recipes! One of my favorites: White Bean and Artichoke Dip with Whole Wheat Tortilla Chips (Makes about 2 cups of dip, recipe from Cooking New American.) 6-8 whole wheat flour tortillas (can also use pita bread) olive oil for brushing on tortillas (I used a mister) salt for sprinkling on tortillas (I used Vege-Sal) 1 can (15 oz.) cannellini beans 1 can (14 oz.) artichoke hearts (I used artichoke bottoms which have hearts only, no leaves) 1 small clove garlic, chopped (about one tsp. chopped garlic) 2 T fresh lemon juice 2 T extra virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling on top 3 T freshly grated parmesan cheese 1 tsp. finely chopped fresh rosemary (I used frozen rosemary, if you only have dried rosemary be sure it's completely crushed) salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste sweet paprika, for garnish Preheat broiler and get out a large cookie sheet for toasting tortilla chips. Brush or spray each flour tortilla with olive oil, then cut into triangles. Arrange in single layer on cookie sheet and toast under the broiler, about 3-4 minutes per side. Watch them carefully, because they get too dark rather quickly. Chips will seem soft when you take them out of the oven, but they harden and crisp as they cool. Drain beans into colander and rinse well, until no foam remains. Let drain at least 5 minutes. Drain artichokes. In food processor, combine beans, artichokes, garlic, and lemon juice and blend until fairly smooth. Keep food processor motor running and add the olive oil in a stream. Add parmesan, and finely chopped fresh rosemary and pulse about 10 times to blend. Season dip to taste with salt and fresh ground pepper. Place dip in a serving bowl, sprinkle with a small amount of paprika and drizzle over a small amount of olive. Arrange tortilla chips around bowl and serve. Chicken Piccata Gina's Weight Watcher Recipes 2 (16 oz total) chicken cutlet halves, all fat trimmed freshly ground black pepper 2 large egg whites 2/3 cup seasoned whole wheat dry bread crumbs olive oil spray (about 1 tbsp worth) 1 tbs light butter juice of 1 lemon, lemon halves reserved 1/4 cup dry white wine 1/2 cup fat free chicken broth 1 tbsp capers Sliced lemon, for serving Chopped fresh parsley leaves, for serving Cut chicken into 4 cutlets, then place cutlets between 2 sheets of parchment paper or plastic wrap and pound out to 1/4-inch thick. Sprinkle both sides with salt and pepper. In a shallow plate, beat the egg whites and 1 teaspoon of water together. Place the bread crumbs in another plate. Dip each chicken breast first in the egg, then bread crumbs. Heat a large saute pan over medium to medium-low heat. Spray a generous amount of olive oil spray on one side of the chicken, and lay it in the pan, oil side down. Spray the top of the chicken generously to coat and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, until cooked through. Set aside until you make the sauce. For the sauce, clean the saute pan. Over medium heat, melt butter, add the lemon juice, wine, chicken broth and the reserved lemon halves, salt, and pepper. Boil over high heat until reduced in half, about 2 minutes. Discard the lemon halves, add the capers and serve one chicken cutlet on each plate. Spoon on the sauce and serve with a slice of lemon and a sprinkling of fresh parsley. Well, my story is sort of complicated. I had a horrible case of influenza and pneumonia back in l995. Then I was on antibiotics for 2 months. I don't know if the antibiotics did me in, or it was the flu/pneumonia, but shortly after that, I developed fibromyalgia and also started going through menopause. I also developed irritable bowel syndrome, GERD and sleep apnea. Its hard to sort it all out, but something seems to cause all of this stuff in me. Are you bowels acting the same? Do you suddenly feel extremely full after eating? Are you on any other meds? When my GI problems were their worst, I was put on a PPI (proton pump inhibitor). That helped the symptoms for awhile. Pepsid (an H2 blocker) does absolutely nothing for me, so you might ask your doc for a prescription for a PPI......oh wait....I think prilosec is otc now. You could buy that and try it. Don't lose hope yet. This might just be a temporary thing you're going through. There is a Ph.D. guy who was on the GERD forum for awhile who wrote a book on how carbohydrates cause alot of GI problems. He believes our systems aren't designed to eat all these carbs and they can't be digested quickly and they ferment, and that causes alot of gas/reflux, etc. So I think you'd do well to lower your carb consumption. The stress echo I had went like this: You go in, and they put you on a heart monitor, and then you get on a treadmill, and they slowly increase the speed and incline, until you reach your target heartrate. Then you immediately lay down and they do an echocardiogram on your heart. It doesn't hurt at all. If they want you to have a nuclear med stress echo, then you will have to have a contrast medium injected into your vein.......but most stress echoes are the first type I talked about. It shows if all your heart muscle and valves are working right. what kind of doctor are you seeing? Once they rule out a heart problem (which I'm sure they will), then I would suggest seeing a good gastroenterologist. I think for some of us, as we age, our parts just don't work as well, and we can't abuse them like we used to. I know that my GI tract does fine, until I start eating too much, and then it starts to fail. You might be able to take care of this problem, just by changing your eating habits. I know how hard that can be! I've struggled with it my whole life. Its much better for me than it used to be, but I think that's because my hormones finally settled down. Men have hormones too, and sometimes they get wacky. I actually think my strange chest sensations are a combination of my GERD and my IBS.

If I could only take 3, it would have to be ones that are bulletproof and have a history of breeding or sporting. So I'd go with

Sieboldiana Elegans (46 sports) self seeds all the time

They are all oldies, but still gorgeous plants to start over with!

Since Steve is on my ship with his hosta gene pool, I have the Liberty to choose what I like, which is a variegated, a big blue and a big yellow :

Hostahillbilly, the last travel is voluntary. You can stay here with all your hostas and watch them explode.Nobody will force you.

Like Steve, I have to think about breeding, while still sticking to my favorites . . .

First Frost . . . (gives me nice powder blue seedlings)
Emerald Ruff Cut . . . (for the green & yellow color, ruffles, & puckering traits)
Fickle Blue Genes . . . (need a decent streaker for breeding variegated seedlings)

Correction to coll 123: it can't change once we've departed. You can't just go back and change your hostas .

Coll123: I figured something was awry with that zone. I was betting you are either in Maine or the PNW. Your garden is absolutely gorgeous - can you send more pix? The hostas are perfect, the stone walls are amazing - and it looks like there's a lot of dappled shade. Perfect. Please post more or let us know if you're in the gallery.

Hmmm, how did I not see this thread when it began? I was up until midnight central zone, GMT -5 counting daylight savings.

I'm going with a lot of hosta SEED. Then for plants:
Dorothy Benedict, the prolific multiplier
Plantaginea, because I adore this one, although just my luck the place we land will be ice cold
Sagae because it is so vigorous

Nice to see Sagae on so many lists. I don't have a lot of Hostas, but it is my favorite. It is huge, and even though I don't know what I am doing, it looks great. I also love my Nigrecens, and my Black Hills. I don't see those much, but mine are really nice.
