Acer palmatum - Japanese Laceleaf Maple

Does anyone know the name of the cultivar that grows to a max of about 4-5 feet tall/wide. The leaves are very slender and red and turns crimson in the fall? It also weeps into like an umbrella shape. Thanks.

There are a number of weeping dissectum cultivars that fit this description - ultimate height is determined by graft placement and training but width can be significantly larger than height over time. Look for 'Red Dragon' or 'Inaba Shidare' (tend to be a bit more upright in habit) or 'Crimson Queen', 'Garnet', 'Red Select', 'Everred', 'Tamukeyama', etc. for reliable mounding weepers.

I concur with GG but I think SG's question had to do ...not with FINDING a specimen... but with identifying one they already have...but this is not clear... If the later is the case it could be almost anything including a genric non grafted mongral...the slender leaves "could" rule out red dragon but it depends on their definition of slender ...same goes with several others including inaba depending on their definition of crimson ..( inaba is NOT crimson in fall it's dark red as wwell as tamaka and s
depending on soil climate etc it may be more or less dark to crimsom!!!) Again First we need to know if we are on a finding or identifying "expedition" If finding GG has laid out some good choices to LOOK at ...if identifying ...as I thought it was ...a picture is necessary but ultimatly it would most likely be a guess ...more or less educated depending on who responds and you will NEVER know for sure IMHO...David

I don't have any experience with Japanese maples but common sense would say to wait until the maple itself decides its seeds are ripe. i.e. when they start to fall naturally. I have grown other trees from seed which I have just collected up off the ground. Why make things harder?

You might want to consider a JM with interesting colored bark for the edge of your deck/patio instead of leaf color. Depending on how much you use your space in spring and fall, a tree with colored bark is pleasing, and rich green in summer. I have trees I grew from seeds of a JM 'Sango Kaku' or Coral Bark Japanese Maple. Of them, one is very dwarf, one dwarf, and one medium, all have colored bark - one more green, one more red and one more coral/yellow. I am sure the real ones are true to the coral color and size but I had fun growing variable ones from seeds and enjoy them in my garden. Supposedly the real ones get 30' tall but in 12 years my tallest mother was 10'. They get multi-hued fall leaf color and the bark color intensifies through late winter, new growth is on coral red twigs with bright leaves. The one advantage these JM's have is that you can prune them whenever you want and they put out even more branching red twigs. They are also on the lower end of prices for JM's. Nancy the nancedar

Well... 'Atropurpureum' is suppossed to be seedling grown, and seedling grown trees are variable. So one tree might be redder during the year than another. Still good trees thou. Sounds like you are moving the tree in a pot...? Few hours of direct sun will help. Once the tree goes greener it won't turn back to reddish, leaves should turn red in autumn obviously.

I have been lurking in this forum and others for some ideas. We need to landscape some new beds as a result of re-doing our back patio area and adding a pond. I'd like to put in a Japanese Maple on one side of the pond. Am looking at the Crimson Queen laceleaf, but I keep reading conflicting information about how big it will be in 10-15 years. I'm looking for a variety that only gets 4-8' max in height. I know the spread will be about 6'. You folks seem to know a lot about the various JM varieties. I have a grafted JM in a front planting bed that is gorgeous. It's been there a little over 5 years and is only about 5 ft now, so the growth rate is slow (about a half a foot or less per year I'm guessing in my zone 7b). Thanks!
