Laceleaf Japanese Maple ??

I just purchased a laceleaf dwarf Acer Palmatum "Crimson Queen" shrub which is in a 3 gallon container. My question is can I re-pot it up into a very large container?? The pot I have to put it in is a Terra-Lite made by Miracle Gro. It is lightweight, yet real clay. The dimensions are 14" base, 21" across the top and 18" deep. I don't want to plant it in the ground. I plan to have it on my outdoor patio. Would there be any reason not to re-pot now in this size contaianer?

Thank you for any advice you can give me on this, I don't want to kill this beautiful tree.

Hi, I bought a little "Crimson Queen" last week about the same size as yours. I read that they only get to about 10 feet tall....in maybe 15 or 20 years and that they do fine in large planter/pots like the one you have. I plan to keep mine in a large pot also as I do not have a good place for it in our yard. Just think of what they do to trees like this when they do bonsai. They prune the h out of them and take them out of the little pots and prune the roots too. I am not into doing a bonsai tree at the moment, but the small Japanese maples like this one make nice bonsai. One can keep them in a pot forever if you lightly prune them if they get too big. Thanks Lesley. I'll keep it in the pot like you are doing, and will be able to move it around on the patio. They are so beautiful!! Good luck with yours also and thanks for responding.

I don't know what specific cultivar it is. ==>>> again ... it doesnt matter.. a tree is a tree ... the trick here... is that it is grafted on a standard .. as it looks to my eye.. that that 12 inch trunk.. is different than that above ... thought i cant tell with that 90 degree bend in the trunk ... if so.. if you remove everything above.. .you will lose the pretty cut leaf dwarf maple above .... any time that that part sprouts.. it should be removed.. if i am right.. and it is a different plant .... now.. again.. what is you goal.. other than to butcher up some plants.. lol ... i know bonsai type peeps who might steal that plant in the night for the cool weathered.. damaged trunk ... and looking at the last pic.. in full glory.. its not an apparent problem ... so.. basically.. let me suggest you are thinking about trying to fix.. what is not a problem ... i call that... loving a plant to death ... and dont get me wrong ... i also have the inclination.. to help it heal better.. but from the pix.. i just dont know how you go about that... without removing a lot of good stuff.. and simply opening more gaping wounds ... if i were standing there.. maybe we could dream up some course of action.. but based on the pix.. i say.. forget about it ... this thing MIGHT collapse in the next 100 years .. due to the problems you think you see .. so be it when it happens ... IMHO .. if you have a real inkling to prune your brains out.. and feel like driving to MI .... i can find you some real trees that need some work .... lol .. a few are on the verge of me having to pay for it.... and i wont care if you destroy them.. lol ... by the time you are done.. you will be planting things.. just so you can go prune your own stuff ..... have a great day ... ken

Still no buds/activity on the laceleaf maple, which was bought at a real nursury and was looking great in the fall after I put it in. I'm holding out hope but it is almost May and I'm surprised there are still no buds. Other maples in my yard and sidewalk out front are doing great. The sugar maples along our street rapidly bloomed this week. My bloodgood maple is fully leafed out, which tells me it is pretty hearty, considering I moved it 3 times since I bought it at Home Depot last year. It is only 3 feet tall though, so I suppose moving it didn't hurt it as much as a big tree, plus I didn't take apart the root ball any of the moves, esp. the last one, when my hardscape contractor moved it with his Bobcat machine. Anyone else in zone 7a have laceleaf maples that are not blooming yet? I hope this sucker isn't dead.

Excellent! That is very encouraging news about the japonicums and shirasawanums being good in the cold. I will reveal my ignorance though and ask you what "FWIW" means, haha. I am not exactly learned in internet lingo as you might have guessed. All of your guys' information has been extremely helpful though, and I am starting to feel much more optimistic about my chances of success. I ended up getting 10 Japanese Maples this year which is about 9 more than I expected I would, haha. But what can I say? The more I learned about them and the more I saw pictures, the more I felt like I needed to have this tree or that. I think I'll be getting more next year for sure and I already have my eye on some of the ones mentioned here. But since I am such a greenhorn I'm going to see how I can do with the ten I have before repeating any of my rookie mistakes. My deepest thanks to you all though for your help!

Or the minimum temperature was just too low for it anyway. It only takes a few hours of cold below a plant's tolerance range to do it in. With their unnaturally slender leaf divisions laceleaf maples particularly have a problem with cold damaging the unfolding leaves in spring, I have seen this on an exposed nursery site even here in Zone 8. Another thing I have seen here is purpleleaf Japanese maples turning into paper bags in hot positions during summer. That is why numerous grower catalogs promote this variety and that variety as having good color retention ("stays a good purple all summer"). We have low summer temperatures here but the humidity also drops--as it would in Idaho, part of the same western half of the country as us with a climate regime that includes precipitation being concentrated in winter and falling off markedly, some places completely in summer. The dreaded greening out of shaded purpleleaf specimens consists of the leaves becoming partly green in the darkest parts of the tree, with the parts remaining purple remaining a good purple. This is much more digestible than the overall fading and scorching of those getting full sun in an area that is not humid enough to keep them looking good. Area in this case can just be the difference between a heavily watered property with a "hydroponic" lawn that gives off cooling water vapor all day and one that is allowed to become hot.

I bought a Crimson Queen about 12 years ago and grew it in a pot on our deck for several years. Although it doesn't get very tall, it spreads broadly, so it was taking up too much space on my deck after 2-3 years. I then planted it in the ground, and dug it about about 5 years later before we sold our house. Put it in a container again for about 8 months, and then replanted it in the yard of my new house. It's now about 3-4' tall and at least 6' across.

I have been lurking in this forum and others for some ideas. We need to landscape some new beds as a result of re-doing our back patio area and adding a pond. I'd like to put in a Japanese Maple on one side of the pond. Am looking at the Crimson Queen laceleaf, but I keep reading conflicting information about how big it will be in 10-15 years. I'm looking for a variety that only gets 4-8' max in height. I know the spread will be about 6'. You folks seem to know a lot about the various JM varieties. I have a grafted JM in a front planting bed that is gorgeous. It's been there a little over 5 years and is only about 5 ft now, so the growth rate is slow (about a half a foot or less per year I'm guessing in my zone 7b). Thanks!
