First market date, your zone and what will you have to sell?

Hello,

Our market starts May 7th. Ours is a city run market and some of don't like the hours, others do. It's Tuesdays and Fridays 10-2. Not a good time if working during the day like lots fo people do, but it's a newer market (3rd year) and things are still getting worked out.

I'm Zone 6 and will have lettuces, kale, onions, herbs, vegetable plants/seedlings, radishes, and strawberries.

Our first market actually started April 24th. I didn't go. I had my daughters birthday. My first market I will attend is on May 8th. I will have spinach, green onions, jams and jellies, radishes, tomato, pepper, cucumber and squash seedlings. I will also have my tomato hanging baskets.

That is enough for now.

My official first day of market is May 1st, but we had a mini-market on April 3 (rained all market) and 24th (better, but no advertising). I have tomato, pepper and eggplant plants. Our strawberries are setting on, and the rest of the produce isn't ready yet. Asparagus is just starting, and rhubarb would be ready if I had some. I may check a neighbor's patch.

Hi, this is the first time I have posted, but I have been reading the comments with some interest. Our farm has been going to the local Farmers Market for over 20 years. We are 3rd generation market gardeners, and one of the founding members of the Farmers Market in our area. I can tell you that most of the vendors do not make much of a profit, and if that is your reason for being there you will need to make a big investment. A small garden is not going to produce enough to 'quit your day job'. But, if you have a quality product, an attractive display, and keep your prices up (be a price maker not a price taker, as they say) you can make some extra money to supplement your income. I will tell you that I make $1500 - 7000 per market, depending on the season and weather, we have 6 staff/family who work with us at the market and another 20 on the farm - and after it is all done, bills paid, I have a profit of under $20,000 from the farmers market (this is not the only way I sell my produce though). We have 2 markets a week from June - October in my area. But, my neighbours are new farmers and they have a much smaller farm and fewer staff and they make about the same as me because they don't have as high input costs (they only sell at the farmers market). They do that with about 7 acres of land. I keep detailed records of everything I sell, and my costs, so that I can raise the price or drop items that loose me money, or grow more of what was really popular. Grow more of the high price, low input crops. Or find a crop that no one else has much of to set yourself off. It is all just basic business sense. Good Luck and happy planting!

The tractor thing is kind of a joke! It was a beast and had no PTO...had become a cost benefit/depreciating asset problem once construction of roads and building were done. Something in the 30HP range with a loader and PTO would be nice. Back to the chicken or the egg... I gave 50 beautiful watermelons away my first year, didn't sell one. Lots of eggplant tomatoes, peppers etc. too! This year I sold on consignment, to restaurants, word of mouth, and did 3 different FM venues. I don't have enough stuff to sell. While I do like/agree with Shakespeare's view that "borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry",I am not sure borrowing should necessarily be taboo for incipient market grower phenoms... After it has been proven that; *One can successfully and legally grow/make lots of awesome foods,flowers, jams,baked goods etc. *Prove an excess of local demand for what they have. *Make pertinent relationships and see blatant potential for more. Cautious/thoughtful borrowing could make sense for some. "It takes money to make money" probably applies to some degree, unless a workable farm falls into your lap. When I sell my tractor or use other income to buy supplies, I am borrowing from my household in a sense, but spending more than I am making from farming is crucial to creating a viable and profitable job of farming in a reasonable time. If we didn't have the resources, I would borrow, modestly, within reason, to do that. For a small market grower this really doesn't appear to represent much money or downside risk vs. the likely cash flow benefits of getting things rolling. My two cents. Russell

If I sale at the 2 smaller markets it could be 4 days a wk, I imagine I would go to Market on Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday-- I would have the option of Friday, but I personally don't want to go back to back days. I know that I will make less at the smaller market, but after gas & fees the other market might amount to an extra $100 or so a month or it could even amount to me going in the hole. The large market has people waiting in line at opening & there are 12 or 15 vendors. About 6-8 are produce, then there is soap, canned goods, candies, herbs, flowers. Oh & for the large market I have to attend monthly producer meetings & pay my membership fee soon, so that is why I need to figure things out sooner than later. Smaller market has about 5 or 6 regulars then those that just show up when they have extra stuff. The smaller market only has 3 vendors that showed up this year on Tuesdays, but they say Tuesdays are VERY slow. So I am assuming it isn't worth alot of peoples time to sell on Tuesdays. The grant is for anyone in Oklahoma that has less than 40 acres. They had 16 openings & my application was selected. There is a big push to eat local. Even McD's labels there items that are MIO (made in oklahoma). With the grant I have to agree to sell half of the produce. They are not worried about profit but want records of the harvest to determine how well plastics help small farmers. Good luck to you, Judy! Starting small is a good way to start until you can see what amount of traffic your market has. I plan to make some orange sweet rolls for Saturday, put them in small sandwich bags, display them in a napkin lined basket and hope they sell out immediately! LOL! I'm probably not going to go with the name Bungalow Breads, the main reason being that I may not stay in this house. For right now I'm not posting a name on my sign, just introducing myself by my name when people ask. I will want to perfect my Parker House roll recipe. People in the South love Parker House rolls! It's the roll of choice for every holiday and special occasion meal. But I don't know how many cooks still make them. Teresa

We have been doing monthly markets all winter and the last one of those was 2 weeks ago. the main/weekly market season starts May 1st for us

We will have asparagus (green and purple), rhubarb, heirloom lettuce, baby lettuce mix, spring mix, arugula, mizuna, tat soi, mustard greens, broccoli raab, kale, radishes, popcorn, catnip, cilantro, tarragon, a few overwintered parsnips, some overwintered leeks and may some fruit and vegetable seedlings.

I expect to bring in a 100 pounds of asparagus and around 40 pounds of lettuce

Wow, that is a lot of asparagus and lettuce. I'm curious as to how many pounds to expect from my 700 asparagus plants planted last year. I never harvest until the second year even tho' they are of really good size. We already have an established bed for ourselves. I've been very pleased with the Purple Passion and this Millenium variety from Canada.

I will also be growing parsnips for the first time this year and planned on a winter harvest. Do they get woody harvested in the spring or were yours picked earlier and stored?? I also grow leeks but have never overwintered them. Do you plant shallots in the fall as well? This sounds very interesting.

Soon we will have sugar snaps, garlic scapes, beets
