Japanese Maple Questions (Pictures)

I would appreciate your help with a a Japanese Maple my great sister got for me!

1 - Can anyone ID the variety? She has one, too, and we would both really like to know what kind we have.

2 - You will notice it has a double leader. Should the tree be pruned? Would you cut off the branch on the right side? Or leave it? What would you do?

Very pretty. Appears to be a Matsumurae of some kind. I wouldn't remove any branches at this point. Good luck with it in north Florida - plant in high shade.

I agree with the other david " Matsumurae of some kind... It is young probably two years and not grafted technically a seedling as far as I can tell I would classify it a generic green JM of the Matsumurae group ...These seedlings can dramatically change their ultimate look for 4 or more years so what it looks like now ( except lesf shape ) MAY NOT necessarily be what it looks like a couple of years down the road trimming is up to you but i'd wait til fall...David

Why anyone felt it was necessary to resurrect and add on to an inactive 12 year old thread is a bit strange........but let me just add this comment. Japanese maples produce shallow and extremely sensitive root systems that resent any sort of disturbance. In fact, it is extremely easy to introduce often fatal disease issues by damaging these roots. So whatever one chooses to underplant their JMs with, it should be something that can be left undisturbed and with non-invasive roots. No annuals that require yearly replacement or perennials that will need frequent division. Smaller, non-suckering shrubs are fine but should be planted simultaneous to the maple. Or any low growing, shallow rooted groundcover.

Have never encountered Osmocote in a tablet form - that's a new one on me! Generally it comes in a jar with just the loose granules and I apply a small amount (1-2 Tbsp depending on container size) each spring as new growth begins. It lasts pretty much all season although I do supplement with a liquid (Dyna Gro) from time to time during the summer months as it provides a lot of the trace elements/micronutrients that Osmocote omits. I would think one tablet is sufficient for most containers. And I am not sure I really consider the development of dead wood on JM's as 'die back'. Certainly die back can occur from winter cold damage as well as disease issues but the typical dying off of small twigs and stems is a completely natural phenomenon with JM's and nothing really to be concerned about. For whatever reason, many of these smaller stems or twigs just fail to survive and you seem to see it more with the weeping dissectum types so I am guessing it has much to do with congestion and shading. There are other trees that develop a similar trait - Styrax japonica and various birches comes to mind - so this is not unique to JM's.

There is no be-all, end-all comprehensive list of JM cultivars. As good as the Vertrees book is (and it IS considered the best), it is still not a definitive listing as new cultivars are introduced every year. The newest, fourth edition (published in 2010) added about 150 new varieties to the previous list but is still significantly shy of the full 1000 or so registered cultivars. No doubt not all 1000 or so are still in commercial production and some may even be lost to history. Someone somewhere must have access to a complete listing but I have never encountered one. And no photo gallery exists that includes them all either. But some of the better specialty nurseries with large inventories will have a decent selection of different cultivars to look at.

Thank you for that informative reply Cearbhaill A selection of these plants will go in the ground and a good few will go in containers.I will also give a few of these away to friends.. Using some for Rootstock will also be a consideration. I have found my 1st year in growing from Seed so enjoyable and am already Chomping at the bit ready to have another go come October. I think I will be far more prepared than in 2015 when the right time is to gather the seeds. I will post another Mix of Pictures in early September.Hopefully you can Chime in around that time and offer your opinion of their Progress Happy Gardening Stephen,Cheshire.UK

Does Matsumurae refer to a subspecies of Japanese Maple which would include a number of cultivars or varieties? (Please excuse me if I've botched the terminology!)

"A leaf group among Japanese Maples characterized by leaf lobes that are very deeply divided - more than 3/4 of the way to the leaf lobe. Example is from A. palmatum 'Suminigashi'"... I think your JM is just a seed grown green generic JM with Matsumurae leaf...David

Oh yes, I'm sorry I didn't confirm earlier, it was most definitely seed-grown.
