Autumn Blaze vs Sienna Glenn ?? Faster..Rounder ???
Comments (7)While the soil in my neighborhood is definitively "alkaline", I don't know that it could be termed "super alkaline". In any case, Autumn Blaze trees outperform Red Sunset and October Glory in growth habit and color in our area. . . in my opinion (GrandmaGrasshopper used to say, "Opinions are like belly buttons, almost everyone has one." ;^) While it is true that Autumn Blaze trees tend to grow rapidly, a legacy of their silver maple heritage, their upward branching tendency and wood density (hardness) inherited from their red maple parentage apparently compensate for what might otherwise prove to be a concern. After five years of envying a neighbor's Autumn Blaze, I took the plunge and ordered two of the critters which will be planted in the next month or so....See MoreAutumn blaze bad limb angles
Comments (4)Rather than attempting to reinvent the wheel and explain this complicated process myself, it is easier to post a link to this excellent article on the structural training of young shade trees. And it is nicely illustrated to boot!! I would suggest you read this carefully, paying close attention to the training processes involved with the decurrent (leader-less) types, as this includes all maples. Your focus while the tree is young is to encourage the development of scaffolding branches or the main limbs that emerge at a proper distance along the trunk. No, you do NOT want to cut off the top and the link will explain how you approach these congested angles. Come back if you have further questions. And you might look into acquiring a pole pruner or saw to help you reach those upper branches....See MoreFt Worth Botanic Gardens Autumn Plant Sale Events Start Tue Oct 4 2016
Comments (0)Tuesday, October 4, at 6 PM, there's a preview of plants that will be in the sale. Thursday October6, from 4 PM to 6 PM there's a pre-sale open to FW Botanic Society members only, & members get a 10% on the plants they buy. Membership is $50, so it may or may not be too late in the year for this to be a good investment. You might check on the FWBG's website to investigate the other perks. Then the big big thing! Friday October 7, 2 PM to 6 PM first day of sale, Saturday October 8, 9 AM to 2 PM second, final day of sale. I never have managed to get there on Friday, but on Saturday the place is like Grand Central Station! Get there *early* to get the best choice of parking space, bring your hat, sunglasses, & bottles of water, wear comfy clothes & shoes, bring your own cart if possible (saves having to load/unload/re-load), & if you see something that you like, grab it. Do not say, "hmmm, I like that, but I'll look at every plant out here, & then if I still like this one, I'll get it on the way out." That plant & every plant like it will be gone! it's loads of fun, & you'll find things that just don't appear at other nurseries....See MoreAutumn/Winter Laundry
Comments (11)This weekend, K and I will have to go through our closets and put the summer stuff to the back and bring the fall/winter stuff forward. My work wardrobe does not change much throughout the year; I wear [generally] the same assortment of dress shirts, just favoring certain colors more in certain seasons. I have a number of wool sweaters and cardigans that will get their first wash in the Miele. Just need to find a flat place to air dry them that won't immediately turn into a cat bed. #lifewithpets I hope it's at least a few more weeks before we need to put the heavy duvet back on the bed. That just feels too much like winter....See Moreangbarnes17
