something wrong with my Beni maiko

It's my most favourite acer out my collection which has always gave of great colour and structure which I done through wiring. I dont know if as im new to wiring and shaping I may have damaged the tree or if it's wind damage or something else. The leaves on some limbs look like they are browning and shriveling up.

Many people will have many suggestions. Here are mine. If you're going to put them in the ground, put them over a tile. Seems this method would go a long ways to avoid fighting downward roots later. Don't worry about where they were cut already. This will not be part of the final tree and unless it is a source of tearing or rot, leave them. Planting at an angle will definitely assist with movement, I however wouldn't cut yet. Every cut slows the plant down so you might get further faster to let grow for a year or two before the initial chop. Since these are cultivars they are probably grafted. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Just watch for that if you do choose to cut them low.

I just looked and have 3 seeds left for the Devils Toothpick. If I remember right the crickets are still belching and farting from eating the plants that were outside. In the next week or so I'm hoping to get out and inventory the plants and get rid of the extras/doubles and see what I have growing then I can put the rest out. I've got almost all of my summer crop out there but I'm running out of room. Too many Manzanos are getting too big. The peppers are really liking the soil mix I'm using. If it still is ok when the 100 degree weeks start I'll have found the perfect mix for the way I grow my peppers. Only lost a dozen plants during the winter so I started out 150 or so plants ahead this year. Everything is looking like if I can keep the bugs at bay I'll have one of the better harvests I've had in a long time. Lots of buds and pods out there now. Re potted my Habanero tree(arbol)and it's as tall as the eves of the roof and filled with new branches.It's already 6+ ft. wide and 7-8ft. high.I'll need a ladder to pick pods again this year. I've got 3 more of them that want to do the same.Gotta find a home for 2 of them if I can. I wanted to mail them to people but it's too expensive. E mail me about what you have to trade and or what you are looking for. I'm up to 820 something varieties but don't have seeds for all of them to trade etc. If i can glue a few buds on each of my plants shut before they open I'll have a lot of seeds in mid summer and fall. I've got some rare stuff out there and if I can get the plants to put out the pods I'll be set up with seeds to spread around soon from the pods I have now. The Baccatums and Pubescens are really going off now.The Annuums are starting to bud too.

Thanks for all the tips, sorry it's been some time since I checked this thread. I've unfortunately been battling spider mites :O... definitely learned my lesson about ordering plants... don't do it! Glad you noticed the black tips on the roots. I actually found out what was going on there.... I have an acrylic divider between my 2 plants that sometimes gets knocked a bit, and I used to rotate the plants around and fiddle with em too much. So I think some slime or whatever was getting on the roots from the acrylic divider and too much touching the plants. It was only the roots right by that divider that got those tips. But its funny you mention H2O2 since I actually tried that before I realized what was going on... and the roots looked like ASS. I used arond 2ml/gal. I waited 3 full days after the peroxide, and there was ZERO root growth, and a LOT more dark coloring on the roots. Then I switched back to Bennies, cut off tons of roots... and the roots started growing again. Very interesting you suggest a ph near 7. That's alot higher than everything I've read. Most sources say 5.8-6.0, but I've also seen a few that say 6-6.5. You're the first person to suggest 7.0 so I'm very curious how you came to that conclusion. I think you raise a VERY good point about knowing when to trash plants. I will be moving into a new house next month, and starting a much larger grow, so I will most likely be trashing these plants unless I can be confident the mites are dead. Currently I have taped up my cabinet with a no-pest-strip inside. I tried neem spray; I think I overdid it since it totally fried one of the plants. I now know that it would have been a good idea to spray just pure water afterwards to get rid of excess residue. I'll post some pics next.

Your little tree is neither of the cultivars you mention :-( Beni Otake means 'red bamboo' and reflects the very narrow, bamboo-like foliage it presents. It is a also a red-leafed form (all season). Shuminagashi is also a red-leafed form with quite large, 7 lobed leaves. Can you identify a graft union on your plant? I'd suspect it is just a seedling tree - a lot of so-called Bloodgoods are grown as seedlings rather than grafted from known stock and less ethical growers and cut rate purveyors like the box stores, etc. have no compunction about selling them as named forms. Seedlings are not named forms nor can they ever be, regardless of their parentage, as they can be extremely variable in size, habit and appearance. That does not mean a seedling grown tree - just a straight generic species Acer palmatum - cannot develop into a lovely tree. Most do. Just not a recognized named form.

I cannot see what's browning in the photos.
Are the wires tight? They don't look like it.
Do you really need them on such a young tree?

This is also one of my favorites. I'm hoping someone will jump in for you.

Sorry my cameras not too great. The third photos probably the best example, all the leafs on the tree are like an ultra violet pink, then like the ones ive took pictures of seem to be going dark and the points of the leaves are starting to turn as if its not getting enough nutrition. I know i shouldn't be wiring this young but too many limbs were rubbing against each other and i hate the thought of pruning it and loosing color and growth. I checked where i have wired also and theirs no signs of swelling or abrasions

Just an update. Just been out to check on it and it seems to have spread to the whole tree ???????????

Hi Clancy,wind can certainly severly damage foliage on young maples when leafing out.I grow many from start and every year the spring winds come and ruin a lot of them.Often they are weakened from the stresses of winter(temperature,wetness etc.)and many don't have the stamina to withstand this defoliation.As they get older it become less of a problem and dissappears.This year for the first time in 3years,the winds didn't come,but we had lovely warm sunshine instead.However the little maples were not bothered by this,they can withstand our sun in UK as long as it's not too windy.Rebounding wind off the house seems to cause even more harm,and obviously sun will add to the problem.
Firstly I'd say don't panic and start throwing water at them,this will only make things worse.It's a common mistake to do this when seeing shrivelled dried up leaves.The damage is done now and nothing will mend the leaves.Check to see that the soil is damp and only water if really necessary and don't fertilise.Looking at your set up it wouldn't be too much a job to stick a few canes in each corner and peg some plastic bin liners or something to provide wind shielding.With a bit of luck with shelter this plant will leaf out again eventually,but sometimes it can take a long time.
