Cleveland OH area hosta nurseries?

I am going to try this again as something happened to my first post....

I will be traveling from central OH to Cleveland next week. I plan on stopping at Wade and Gatton along the way but am wondering if anyone can recommend a good hosta nursery or a nursery that sells hosta and other perennials in the Cleveland area?

Petitti's has a decent variety of hostas, along with everything else.....http://www.petittigardencenter.com/

But Cahoon Nursery is the best I have been to locally for hostas. They used to claim to say they had more than 600 different varieties. I never counted them all, but I believe it from my visits.....http://www.cahoonnursery.com/

There certainly is something going on with messaging here on this forum. Yesterday on the conifer forum, I did not see the 'Post a Follow-up' but instead an empty Message box with signup information of another poster. I was not even signed up at that moment.

Teach: If you can grow a white nectarine, of any variety, in the Cleveland area, my hat will be off to you. Plum curculio and the oriental fruit moth usually make mincemeat of nectarines grown in the east and midwest before they are even half-grown. I still have one nectarine tree out there in the orchard (used to have several), but take extreme spraying and protective measures to try to save even a very few fruits. Nectarines are the single most attractive fruit to these insects (with the possible exception of pluots), and the sweet fragrant white nectarines will be impossible for them to resist. I hope you are not a member of the organic cohort, or you won't see a ripe nectarine, even though you might have a pretty nice looking tree. I never had trouble growing the trees. Don't ask!!! LOL! My first love is hosta, altho I've become a two-timer and now have a polygamous relationship with hostas and brugs!! Wildflower, brugs do okey in the South- the leaves get as large as up North, but the petioles (leaf stems) don't get as long. The reason your containers do so well is that they are exposed to more cold, being above ground all winter, so they get a better chill than the ones in the ground. I do have some very nice ones, should get some pictures into photobucket this year! I usually hybridize hosta, but we are having early-for-June high temps, and so that puts a damper on that! I give everyone the benefit of the doubt that the advise they give is well intentioned and aims to help the new people who might not know about hosta problems including the HVX virus. It took me years and years to listen to Ken about growing Hostas on the driveway and in the sun. I've been really happy that I finally listened. The adivice and warning about HVX is important to know. The bottom line is that it is a personal choice what we do with that knowledge. I suppose I'm unconventional in my garden because I move my plants around all the time and at the slightest whim. My aim, possibly different than most others, is that my garden look full and pleasing to me this year, right now. I like my plants to grow well but having the absolute perfect conditions and the largest size is not that important to me. I write this not as advice to others but as a confirmation to anyone who might think like I do and choose to go in their own direction. It's your garden - do what you like. As far as HVX goes, I take it very seriously. I had at least one or two that had the virus before I'd ever heard what it was. I destroyed them and the few they contaminated by me not knowing enough to be careful. Since that time I do occasionally buy from Box Stores or local nurseries where I know I've seen HVX plants before. I just try to be careful with those plants. I'm not the most organized person so some day I will no doubt slip and should one of the plants have HVX it might cross to another. I'll live with it. I think HH put it very well and said you should be very, very careful. If you are it's your choice. I think Bkay made an important point about all the other things that can go wrong with the hostas. Right now tree roots, voles and cutworms have passed HVX on my worry list. Neimtodes are a mild annoyance since they don't show up until late in the year. Here are a few of my mislabeled plants and a few I bought knowing I was risking the HVX I 'willed' this plant to become cupped for many many years. It never did and I bought another Abiqua Drinking Gourd. I like this one anyway. The Canadian Nursery was not Hosta Choice Took me a couple years to realize this wasn't Fringe Benefit since I could never find a good picture of Fringe Benefit. Eventually, because of a picture of OBL from hostafreak I identified it. I'm very happy with this mistake. I knowingly bought this plant and took the risk. You can't beat the price and I've keep it in one place, no moving around. So far so good. It's one of my best light centered hostas. The leaves are thick and the it keeps the dark green color even in the sun. This was from a local nursery where I'd seen cases of HVX in the past. I checked that it was from a different supplier than the virused ones were and took the chance. I hadn't bought this plant from mail order because I'd heard it was hard to grow (it's not). Seeing the large size plant in a pot at a resasonable price seemed worth it to me.

Unfortunately for you, you will be about a month early for the good hostas. Cahoon's is worth the visit for 2 reasons, even if the 500-600 varieties of hosta aren't on display yet. One reason is to see how much woody plant material can be stacked into a small area. They carry the usual, and an excellent variety of the highly unusual. The other reason is the owner, Rich. He is a national treasure, and I have faith that he will find someone good to replace Rachel in the hosta area! You will also be a month early for the spring opening of the Ruh's Homestead Division, and to see anything at Bob Kuk's place (which is open by appointment only). Wade & Gatton is open but it will be a little early to see much there too. I would plan a trip back in June and spend a whole day there. You will need it to properly tour the display gardens as well as the sales area. Or wait till July if you want to see the daylilies.

I second the Cahoon's recommendation.... the most mini's I've seen a local nursery carry here.

You must go to Peter and Jean Ruh's garden! He or his wife will give you a golf-cart tour of their hosta plantings (and their shelty will leap into the trail to "herd" you). You'll see some of Peter's great introductions and lots of wonderful hosta. If you see a hosta that you want, but it hasn't been dug, they'll put you on the list to get it when they dig. I second the recommendation of Peter And Jean Ruh's Homestead Division. They are great hosts, but it is best to call ahead I've heard.

Also, consider Bob Kuk who is near Cleveland right off the Ohio Turnpike. Again, call ahead and he will talk your head off as he discusses hostas he's hybridized and hosta people he has known.

By all means get down to Wade and Gatton's if you can. Van Wade has a terrific place and will give you a guided tour. Plan on spending half a day there.

Most older posts are missing from the forum right now, but a few weeks ago Denny (aahostas) posted ago about his visit to Wade's. I posted about one year ago about my Ohio visits to Wade's, Kuk's and Ruh's.

I do not know how often he opens his garden, but Doug Beilstein in Mansfield Ohio is also one to try to see. His website is Hostaworks.com and he sells seed online.

Ronnie, I know this is the opposite direction, but have you visited Cory's Wildflowers in Chillicothe? No need to visit anywhere else.. all of his hosta are 9.99 to 12.99.

Thanks for the recommendations, everyone!!!! I've only been to Wade and Gatton once, about 8 years ago. I plan to leave early(they open at 8AM)stop there and spend a few hours. Based on your recommendations, Calhoons will be another stop as my destination is pretty close to Calhoons.
Kuk and Ruh will have to be another trip....
lynnem---YES, I've been to Cory's at least five times...beautiful setting...love those hostas planted in and across the ravine.
Speaking of recommendations---anyone living in or passing through central OH might want to check out Amity Farm (See link below). This business has just been open a few years and most of their hostas are dug out of the ground. The owner told me she was inspired by Mr. Cory.

lynnem, prices at Amity are very competitive---most @$9-15. Plants are very healthy and owner very knowledgeable. Just north of Amity(practically "next door" off of route 37) is a large perennial nursery, Baker's Acres.
