I grow a few hostas and do like them but don't go crazy over them. I would like to have some more but I just don't have enough shade. Sorry there's a couple duplicate pics here.

Shawn, I have a hosta addiciton too... The only one off your list that I'm growing is Great Expectations. I have maybe 40 named one's but am out of room for any more. I don't think we have cold enough winters here for them to do really well like they do up north. I've got some of the dwarf's and small's in pots and those seem to do the best for me. Great pics Karen! Is the 4th one down on your list Guacamole? That one is doing great for me this year...

I don't remember what any of them are named. I just picked out ones I like and plant them. There's a woman nearby that grows hundreds of hostas and sells divisions every year. She has some of the most unbelieveable stuff at really great prices. I wish I'd found her before because I don't have room for anymore. She has some that have these enormous crinkly leaves that I'd love but they'll burn up in the sun : (

lol Shawn, your a hotsaholic! I have some hostas. The ones I know the names of are 'Sum & Substance', 'Francis Williams', 'Wide Brim', and 'Patriot'
the others are all NOIDS now I suppose.
I need more..alot more. I decided I need more in the front. I got most of mine at HD, Lowes, and got some named baby ones in a bag at Costco as well. Those are the ones named above, as I lost my other notebook with all the other names. I need to start keeping my lists on the comp.

I fell in love with hostas during the few years I spent in Madison WI. They are so sublime. I love the leaf texture especially in the blues.

I've never had good luck with them here. Summers are too hot and the winters are cold enough I think. I've got two scraggly ones planted next to a hydrangea. I would imagine that if it's shady enough for the hydrangea then it's shady enough for the hostas but they look terrible. Maybe I'll try to find an even shadier patch for the poor little guys.

I have some hostas too! but just a few because i have limited shade, and they compete with more tropical plants (clivias, blechnum gibbum, bromeliads, spathiphyllum) for shady spots. I grew all of mine from seed, and this is their third year from seed.

Wildflower, i didn't know that they needed cold. maybe that's why mine never get that big.

Your tree fern is gorgeous. They are so cool when they get big. I'm surprised that your pansies look so good. The minute the temps heat up mine get all spindley.

Thanks Karen, it is quickly becoming a monster as we type! it was not half this big last year. Those pansies are in a shady area and only recieve morning sun, so that's why they look good. lol. The ones in full sun are getting all scraggly and coming to an end. I always get a couple that survive into the following year though, and they reseed themselves too, so theres always volunteer seedlings throughout the front bed. About the hostas, is the one in the second pic a single plant? or is there multiple plants together? I think i have the same one, but mine never gets that big (it's in my second photo in the lower left hand side).

Wow, cool plants you all have. I only have one hosta. Its doing well but I keep it on the front porch in an elevated pot to keep the snails away from it, lol.

My first love is hosta, altho I've become a two-timer and now have a polygamous relationship with hostas and brugs!!

Wildflower, brugs do okey in the South- the leaves get as large as up North, but the petioles (leaf stems) don't get as long. The reason your containers do so well is that they are exposed to more cold, being above ground all winter, so they get a better chill than the ones in the ground. I do have some very nice ones, should get some pictures into photobucket this year! I usually hybridize hosta, but we are having early-for-June high temps, and so that puts a damper on that!

Lots of my larger hostas are in pots, too. They look great!

Brenda, I know I asked you before but I forget what you said...what is a good source for hostas? I like direct source hostas but want another source to see if I can find stuff that they are sold out of. What is your favorite streaked one because I am thinking about splurging on one of those?

Except for the 4th and last pics they are all single plants. Some are quite large, 4'+ across at the widest point. They haven't been divided in about 5 years and really need it but it's such a pain that I've been putting it off. The big ones are along the fence that's being replaced so I want to see how many the contractors kill before I do anything. lol

Naylor Creek Nursery and Hallsons are most reputable for the selection, the price, and shipping. Naylor has alot of the new ones, too! Good luck, the selection may be a bit picked over because of the time of year.

Also, hostas are going to do terrific for you, in your zone- they do like water, tho!
