NaturalNews) Senate Bill 510, the Food Safety Modernization Act, has been called "the most dangerous bill in the history of the United States of America." It would grant the U.S. government new authority over the public's right to grow, trade and transport any foods. This would give Big brother the power to regulate the tomato plants in your backyard. It would grant them the power to arrest and imprison people selling cucumbers at farmer's markets. It would criminalize the transporting of organic produce if you don't comply with the authoritarian rules of the federal government.

Yep -- the very same people running the TSA and its naked body scanner / passenger groping programs.

This law would also give the U.S. government the power to arrest any backyard food producer as a felon (a "smuggler") for merely growing lettuce and selling it at a local farmer's market.

It also sells out U.S. sovereignty over our own food supply by ceding to the authority of both the World Trade Organization (WTO) and Codex Alimentarius.

I have no political agenda!!I'm a market grower, who feels others in the buss. should know about what might affect our buss. If it was just a political thing I would post it in other threads.I'm a legit buss.,just worried about my future and that of my fellow producers.

While this bill may not control home gardeners, it will but onerous regulations on small farms, small/home based food businesses, and regulate supplements. The senate is considering a related bill, S.3767 (a provision originally removed from S.510), that they will then amend S.510 to. These are bad bills. They will make it hard for the little guy to compete, since the compliance costs and fees are a great burden to the small producers, the ones who don't cause food illness generally. But the big producers and corporate farms (who are regulated already) can bear the costs, and are setup for this kind of regulation. Please read up on this and find out more. Even today, Thursday Sept. 23rd, the Senate is trying to push this through without debate. But it IS very controversial, and should not be rammed through. Btw, I am not against big business. But I am for small farmers, local economies, and for high quality health and nutrition. I read the bill and did some research on the current law. IMO, all this bill would do, if passed, is take a lot of things that are already contained in current law but are being enforced by a hodgepodge of agencies and instead give a new agency responsibility for enforcing the laws aimed at protecting consumers. The current legislative authority for the USDA and the FDA already contains most, if not all of this language - YOUR GOVERNMENT ALREADY HAS THIS POWER. The concern, and the backstory behind legislation like this, is those agencies aren't doing enough to protect us because they are beholden to their "industry partners" - big businesses that guarantee that the regulations are easy for them to deal with while being difficult for small farmers to deal with, so they can push their small farmer competitors out of business. As I read it, all this bill does is take the current laws regarding food safety and put them in the hands of an agency whose mandate is to protect consumers - someone we can go to if salmonella creeps into the egg supply to ask "what on earth happened?" Does this law have the potential to shut down small organic farmser? Sure. So does the current law of the land. Ask any organic farmer. The red-tape requirements are insane at this point. And if your neighbor the chicken farmer is making a living without bothering with that, that's great for him, but he's violating the current law just as much as he would violate this law, if passed. This really isn't bigger government than we already have. It's just government that isn't controlled by multinationals. Will it be corrupted by multinational corporate lobbyists? Probably. But I repeat: your government already has this authority. The only substantive change is it puts that authority into the hands of an agency with a mandate to protect consumers. That is not the mandate of the USDA or the FDA at this point. And Ricky, all the best thoughts heading your way.

Talk about strange rules: I can raise a variety of hot peppers and either sell them ripe or dehydrate them and sell them that way. Ditto for fruit. But with peppers, I can grind them up (and I can cut up fruit) then mix them together, put the spice in a baggies or bottle and sell the blend. But not fruit, unless I have a certified kitchen. But what I can do is put together a container that has X amount of dehydrated apples, bananas, cherries, apricots, peaches, blackberries, raspberries, etc., as long as they are each in their own bag/bottle and sell it. Scott, Bill 5-10 is the Food Safety and Modernization Act of 2010, not 2009. It should be fairly obvious that the FDA intends to continue pushing more regulatory laws on the public as well as small farmers. Do we need this one? Not in my opinion. Legislators introduce bills such as this under the guise of "food safety" which the FDA will enforce if passed. Then the FDA will hypocritically at the same time not allow labeling of GMO foods, as well as ALLOWING overarching power to Monsanto to continue their mafia style control of GMO seeds, etc, etc, adnauseum. I for one am for less legislation over what small growers can produce, market and what consumers like myself can and can't buy, eat, or know what the heck is in it. In fact, I'm also opposed to the continual cramming of more and more legislation down the public's throat, PERIOD! It seems like the more laws being passed, the less freedom we have, not more. Anyway, this link below lists some of Senator Tom Coburn's objections to Bill 5-10 which are not without merit. One of which is the EXPENSE of enforcing it, if passed. The thing is, the bill never passed and since that session of Congress has ended, it is dead. It would have to be reintroduced and pass the house, senate and the prez would have to sign it.

Mike, according to our conference in So IL, it did pass with exceptions.

Myself, it doesn't affect me at all because:

1. I don't sell $500,000 or more
2. I will not be selling to restaraunt, stores or thru other wholesalers.
3. I will not be buying produce more than 275 miles away from my farm--I have done this in the past.

This are the 3 exemptions that allow me to not worry about it.

We all need to use our minds for issues beyond sowing, growing and marketing. If we don't someone with a title will use it for us. We are the ones that should know how future cures in this business will affect us, I for one need to keep informed if for no other reason to know that I have just been put out of business and a lively hood. Please do keep me informed. None of us have a great deal of time for the daily news this time of the year, if you are not politically correct, I will forgive you. Our class is not overly represented so your sympathy and morale support maybe all I have between my choosen "Garden of Joy" and my lively hood demise. I do invest annually my squirled away small fortune to continue in this business, your wisdom posted here may someday gratefully save my grub stake. I would not be shocked to wake up some day and find my way of living is history and I have been replaced with no legitimate cause or reason. If marketing is now difficult, I would then need to do miracle-marketing or retreat year around to my recliner and have food delivered to me. That would of course be good, healthy, clean and inspected fresh bland sprayed produce. Keep me posted.
