Hosta bed evolution - start to finish!

Looks like we have a lot of pics of whole beds right now, so I thought I would throw in the bed that I made last year.

First, a pic of it BEFORE (this was Spring of 2013):

I had pulled english ivy (hate that stuff!) out of about half of the bed at this point and we had to go ahead and dump the remainder of a truckload of much in there to get it off of the grass as fast as possible, so just stuck it in there where I had already weeded,etc.

By the beginning of Summer, I had 90% of it pulled of the ivy and was starting to place everything where I wanted it.
Stayed like this for a while as I was making last minute decisions.

Can't seem to find a pic of everything planted last year, although I know I took plenty. I should note that at the very beginning of spring, before the hostas were up, the tree in this bed split down the middle and we only have half of it left, so you'll see it's replacement in the next pic.

Here's a pic of everything coming up this Spring. This is when I decided to extend the bed so that my hostas could be seen from the road as well--a little curb appeal, if you will. You can see the new part around the back curve of the bed.

Here's a pic with the hostas being decided upon in the new extension, they have roller skates until I'm sure, then they go in the ground!

and here's a recent pic. It's grown so much since last year! This bed is about 18 x 22 on the two shortest sides (sorry, can't remember exact dimensions and it's dark outside right now!) Looking good now. Loving it.

The bed looks beautiful and it great that you took picture of the different steps. I keep forgetting to do that for my creations.

Good job, Funn. You are enjoying it I bet. I note you justified increasing the size of the hosta bed by claiming (with justification I am sure) that it helps curb appeal. Now that is a very good point you make. What spouse does not wish to increase the value of the property. I had not thought of that one. Smart cookie!

I don't generally do ONE project at a time and it is also hard to tell when I am finished. I begin with a perfunctory layer of effort. Like I test out the plan with some small changes that can be easily reversed if I change my mind. Pots help with that, since they are moved around somewhat easily. I move umbrellas into spots to test the effect of shade. Does it need to be more this way or more that way.....where is the sun on the longest day of the year (which is coming up in a week or so). That day I take lots of pictures of shade patterns.

At this time, I am working on both ends of my 100 foot long hosta "Back40". The north end in the morning when it is cooler. The south end in the afternoon when it is shadier. I also water the north end while I work on the south end. After dinner I don't work on any projects, but I am back in the garden with a fresh eye to see if I am on the right track with my work.

This is what will be the objective for the entire space...to make it look like this or even better in my secret garden

Hopefully my fence guy will be here first week of July to construct a square-lattice screen 10 foot high and 40 foot wide to provide summer shade of an afternoon for my north end hosta. I thought about this for a couple of years before deciding how to shade the area. I'll also steal some more hosta room from the lawn so there will be another raised bed for in-ground hosta, a garden bench, and more huge containers for the giant hosta which happened to find their way to my house.

During the recent rains I've frequently walked the lawn and garden to identify low spots or sloping ground which could be corrected as I design the hosta bleachers and raised beds.

My criteria is to make it primarily esthetically pleasing and functional with adequate sunlight at the right time of day.
If my eyes are not fooling me, the heavy substanced gold hosta can take a lot more afternoon sun than I suspected. It is mid-June tomorrow and so far no crispy critters. Oh a few leaves got burned when tender new hosta got a dose of sun in the beginning. But of the hosta conditioned to the climate and having good substance, NO crispy critters. This includes some greens which tend to gold in the sun, in the plantaginea family. I am really looking forward to having that tall sun screen up. Until then, I have my army of umbrellas positioned as required.

I really would like to see more of your "curb appeal" beds, Funn.

How much of a leaf cover do you need for that? I don't really know. This is the first time I am planting in the front yard woods, after picking up sticks and limbs, trimming up some trees, pulling up tree seedlings, pulling up 'some' vines, and digging out lots and lots of May Apples, and raking aside all the leaf cover. Stringing the rows and doing the actual planting is the easiest part of the whole planting experience. I'd say the leaf cover is at least 6" or so. I kept watching the weatherunderground on the computer all day, hoping it would get warm. Even though it wasn't warm at 4 PM (was just 34 though it was sunny) I headed out to get a few planted. Surprisingly, I wasn't cold, the soil was wet, but not clumpy, my hands didn't get cold, and I managed to plant 15 little bags, 47 total bulbs. so all those from the front yard (city tree) went to the city for composting. How I wish I had trees that weren't all in the woods or at the edge of the woods. All the leaves at the edges of the yard are full of sticks and twigs. I used to sometimes go to friend's houses and do their leaves, just to get to bring them all home for the veggie garden. I've got this wonderful leaf shredder that reduces them 13 to 1, turning leaves into what I call brown gold. I think the little willow leaves should be fine. Last year I remember "discovering" that the open areas were frozen solid while those with some cover were not. I might be able to exploit that some year if I knew what to aim for. How deep? I wonder if you couldn't just cover an area with either clear plastic or black plastic to keep the warm in and the freezing cold out, thus lengthening the planting season so you could get in on the late sales, like from B and B's.

ella - what a lovely space you created! To help keep the soil in good shape you'll need to add organic matter yearly. Compost spread as mulch in late fall topped with irregular wood chips has worked well for our beds. I reach into the beds in spring using whatever tool is handy to be sure the mulch is pulled back from the plants, but don't dare step into the beds because the soil is just too soft & wet. Slug control is 3 pronged - sluggo type bait, hunt & remove when soil is moist, & also spray with ammonia water... Repeat. Repeat. Especially vigilant late summer to get all the adults possible and in early spring spray often with the ammonia water to get in & around emerging hostas to prevent damage. You're right that Burgundy Glow ajuga spreads less vigorously than Bronze Beauty, but in my 9 month wet climate still spreads fairly well. --3 Burg. Glow bareroot starts from a plant swap this April -- poor soil mulched with coarse wood chips around stepping stones across a low area in part shade became 30+ by now in August spreading out 3 feet square! --spring planted Bronze Beauty 12" apart on center by the next spring was solid around stepping stones, hose reel, etc. That patch is easily 4 feet x 6 feet up & over each other so that not all even rooted just runners spread. Easy care for that area when stepped upon & an easy source of countless starts for other gardens. In another area about 10 runners removed & planted became 3 feet x 6 feet in a year's time growing over pathway rocks toward stepping stones in the middle of the path. If you keep an eye on it & remove the excess runners your hosta will be safe. Otherwise the ajuga will over run & shoot runners between stems & even into the crown. Since the biggest growth spurt is in late spring I just snip the runners in early summer before they root. I am running out of new garden space and friends who don't have their own ajuga patch.

Yes, we stay away from the typical cottonwood for just that reason: I have a neighbor 200 yds away with a 40-50 ft cottonwood hedge on one of his property lines - so we get all the "cotton " we need. Yes, I top them myself while still manageable - and they do indeed regrow, but these grow too fast as it is! So just plan regular haircuts! I have studied tree succession since university - almost had a minor in Natural Resources via silvaculture studies, which as a city boy I found absolutely interesting, well next to chemical engineering, my first love! I specialize in oaks, chestnuts and buckeyes (pinks, reds, yellow and Ohio), golden locust, tricolor beech and redbuds. Oh, and a special gift from Hosta College of Parrotia Persica "Vanessa" which is spectacular even as it matures. A few gold conifers thrown in for winter display. Japanese maples: probably 20 different ones (Beni Kawa with brilliant red bark as it gets cold is favorite) and a few nuts, walnut, butternut, hazelnut. Oh yeah, variegated kerrias, forsythia, witchhazel. Finally years ago Alex Summers began hybridizing crabapples for very small fruit of different colors and flowers. I have about 20 of his select seedlings: the neat thing is they don't drop their fruit, but the birds get to eat it and no mess for me! Sooo glad you like it! I have numerous large oaks all over the yard. Lots of dogwood as well as my folks just loved dogwoods. Katy IS innocent, Helen. I'm a real laid-back person and she's the perfect dog for me. As far as I know, in 3 years her hackles have never been up and I've never heard her growl. She's a love and all my friends and their dogs/cats love her. I can't wait to get that hosta bed done! I even have dormant hosta in the refrigerator crispers. ! Yes, I will send photos.
