Starting Maple Cuttings

I would like to start some maple cuttings from a young maple that was girdled last year by deer, and is in decline. It grew shoots from it's base last year, and I was thinking I could use them to start some new trees. Can I take hardwood cuttings now? And start them indoors? I have rooting hormone, but other than that, I don't really know what I'm doing. If I start them this winter, can I expect to put them outside this spring?

Any help is appreciated. Any information I've found seems pretty vague.

The information you've found is vague because this is an issue that goes round and round without any clear cut answers. You will see a lot of debate on this subject......there are many that find most maple species very difficult to strike from cuttings. Either the cutting doesn't take at all (largest percentage), fails to root successfully (root development not sufficient to support plant growth) or rooted cuttings somehow lack the ability to overwinter. By far the preferred methods for propagation are seed grown tree, grafting or less successfully, air layering.

Now is not the time to attempt cuttings - trees are dormant/not in active growth and unlikely to develop roots. Cuttings taken in July from new wood that has hardened off will be more successful - try to take cuttings at least 8-10" in length and that contain at least 3 nodes. Use a rooting hormone, provide some warmth, even humidity and indirect light. And hope for the best. If your original tree was grafted and the cuttings you are taking are from the base or below the graft, understand that you may be growing an entirely different species.

If your tree has produced any seeds, I'd try germinating them as a back-up plan :-) Growing maples from seeds is downright easy compared to growing them from cuttings!

If you have any willow branches that can be ground layered, that is the fastest way to get strong roots. I used to root all mine through ground layering. Don't know anything about red maples.

Before I select trees, I usually check out the Ohio Conservancy site and make sure what I want isn't an invasive tree. Amurs aren't on the Ohio list. What I'm hoping these will turn out is like this photo. I've seen several in the 'hood and really like them - not too tall, but a nice canopy for a bench underneath. Pretty color in fall and with more and more windstorms I wouldn't have to worry about them falling on the house. LOL (Like my red, sugar or silver maple likes to remind me now and then.) So, to recap: Since I don't have the places ready to plant them in permanent locations right now, I could a) pot them up in 2-gals until fall or b) dig them in a holding bed and dig them up and replant in fall. I guess it won't hurt them if I gently pull the 2 trees apart when potting. Right now my 'regular' maples are all budding out. But no leaves, of course. Perhaps I should keep these babies in the unheated garage for a couple weeks before putting them into a hold bed (with or without pot). P.S. How short lived are they? Will they last 20-30 years? please understand.. that trees will not attack and destroy.. a fully intact foundation.. basement.. nor pipes .. but they will take advantage of pre-exisiting problems... like foundations/basements that are already cracked... or pipes that are already leaking ... one option ... would be to plant some other things right now... to hide the sight lines ... and once they get going.. planning on taking down this one in the next few years ... but as noted.. the replacements will have to be as far from the canopy as possible ... what do you need grass for?? .. the kids to frolic in??? .. if so.. go with kids as a high point variable ... they need grass ... i cant go any further than any of the above peeps.. in my hatred for this tree ... so i would be repetitive ... a pic might help us understand a 20 foot deep backyard.. and what you are dealing with.. right now.. we are kinda guessing about all that ... ken

I actually have seen a few sporadic seedlings under the tree, most of them deep red. I tried to transplant one, it just sort of sat in stasis for a year and died a slow death the next season. I figure starting a bunch of the seeds I'm likely to get one keeper. In the interim I found a good web site about this very topic. Looks like I should wait till october to pick the seed pods. Thanks for the advice; I'll wait until June or July then.

My next problem is how the heck will I overwinter them? If I do get some roots by the end of July, I'm guessing the cuttings will be nowhere near strong enough to go outside into the ground when I live in zone 3! Could I cover the cuttings in a bag, and put them in the fridge?(to mimic the dormant stage)

I'd store the rooted cuttings for winter someplace where they will remain dormant yet not allowed to freeze solid....an unheated basement perhaps or garage that stays right around freezing? Light really isn't a concern, it's the temps that are most critical. If you can shoot for 40-35F you should be good. And then you will gradually need to wean them into light and higher temperatures when winter is over and it is safe to leave them outside.
