Poor Sickly Amur Maple Tree
Comments (6)Denidill: I've done some reading, and although my problem could be transplant shock or lack of fertilizer as suggested by others here, I'm pretty sure now it's lack of iron. I'm going to give it iron chelate 1-2 inches below the soil and water it well, as soon as the ground can be worked. That apparently works better longer term than spraying the leaves. If that doesn't help, I have until August to return it for a refund. From what I've read, your tree would be happier with iron chelate in the soil if that's it's problem. It's supposed to help for 1-2 years. Good luck to both of us =:)...See MoreAmur Maple, Acer ginnala
Comments (5)So. Does this look like an Amur Maple? ... finally has leaves out which were not damaged by the freak Artic Spring blast this year. The flower bud cluster has formed, but not open yet. Here is the multi-trunk, this would be very hard to remove without machinery I should think, but I'm am considering it... the surrounding soil is full of small roots also, very hard to even dig any hole more than a couple of inches...See MoreAmur maple or Korean??
Comments (6)Glen- thank you for your information. I had heard varying reports about the growth rate of the amur maple- some sites said "moderate" others said slow. But from what I gathered, in comparison to the Korean it is more of a moderate grower. I will try a search on their scientific names (I guess that's what they are called??), most of the information I found was pretty basic and it seemed like each site just copied the same thing...word-for-word in some cases! I am also planning on going to the nursery today to inquire about actually purchasing one. The people there are pretty knowledgable so maybe they can give me some thought starters too. The only downside is that now I have to re-think where I am going to plant it. I may have to move it 6 feet or so in another direction because apparently there's some power lines or something in the area I wanted to plant it. Arrggg!! I've got this HUGE lawn with nothing in it, but unless I plant something close to the edge of my yard (bordering on the neighbors) or directly in front of our window, we run into the power lines. Thanks again! I'll post what I've decided on....See MoreWhy are Amur Maples so expensive?!
Comments (6)Acer ginnala is usually not planted anymore as Acer tataricum is more adaptable. I know the former is considered invasive in some areas not sure but assuming the latter could be as well. sooner as an online nursery is just expensive in general not much to do with the plant itself. I pretty much stop buying online as you typically get mediocre plants for insane prices. I enjoy getting something from song sparrow, broken arrow and western evergreen and that's about it....See Moregiantslug
