Amur Maple, Acer ginnala

I believe I have an Amur Maple. Never shows any red color thou like is often described thou, just dull yellow. The small tree could be 30-70 years old, I dunno. Was planted as a shrub at the side of the house, near 15 feet high. Obviously very hardy.

Were they sold as shrubs years ago? Why were they sold? Just because they are extremely hardy? I guess it gets nice and green in the spring and grows, better than nothing.

Mine has a thick branching trunk. It is impossible to grow anything under it with so much roots. If I cut it down this Sprng how hard will it to dig up the roots so i can plant other things in the area? Will I need to get a machine, or will the roots break done somewhat quickly?

Maybe it's another subspecies of Tatarian maple. Or really is just a ginnala with lousy color. Is it shaded much?

Half of this Maple shrubby tree gets plenty of full sun 9 to 4pm. I've noticed what seem very likely to be it's seedlings blown into my vegetable garden in the fall and a couple of them had quite nice bright red leaves. Maybe the tree is variable in genetic fall color like Acer rubrum?

I disagree with the notion that Norway maple is in some way inadequate in terms of aesthetics. Babs said "not nice bark, not healthy foliage...." and more and it is that part with which I find disagreement. The leaves are lustrous and thick-looking, the bark is okay, nothing wrong with it, the fall color, while not in the same league as sugar maple or red maple, is still brilliant in many cases. Hey, I totally agree with not planting this tree in situations where it can escape into the wild, which is most situations, but that's due to its invasive potential, not a lack of aesthetic attributes. This is opinion, but after all, I do believe there are reasons that several million Norway maples got planted all over the northern US, and those reasons do not include that it is ugly. One final point: Tar spot, a nuisance fungal pathogen, does impact the foliar quality of N. maple, and to a greater degree than in other maple species. So maybe that's what Babs was getting at, and to that extent, I do agree with her. But that's due to a pathogen, not an intrinsic factor of the tree species itself.

Ordinarily getting back into the ground would be a better situation for them. A very hardy tree/shrub, cold probably not a problem for them now even there. And plants in pots are more vulnerable to cold than those in the ground. This is an early-leafing tree, you should see some green fairly soon. Some upright forms, possible hybrids with Tatarian maple are offered by a few wholesale nurseries. You might get an upright habit if you have one of these types, otherwise allow for low, quite wide-spreading crowns of long, straight branches. All will branch and bulk up with age, making planting two together probably unnecessary - and might produce a bothersome clutter later.

Hi everyone. I have an Amur maple on the property and it's covered in beatuiful red seeds this year. The tree looks very healthy and has grown very well this season. I'd like to collect some seeds this fall and try growing a few more trees next year. I'm just wondering when the seeds should be collected. Is there a particular time/month to collect them or just wait until they turn from red to brown? Anyone have any tips or suggestions for growing Amur maples from seed? Thanks Pardak

One way you call tell Amur maple from typical Tatarian maple is the latter has dull leaves. It often has weak fall color as well, but not always. Bright red is much more characteristic of Amur maple. So are leaves with lobes, not seen much on mature growth of Tatarian maple. If yours is definitely of this type and has glossy leaves with some lobing then it is just a stinker Amur maple.

If its flowers are fragrant you've an Amur maple. The Amur maple is the only maple whose flowers (which appear in late spring) which have a definite, IMO very pleasant, fragrance. I love my Amur, it's only 4 years old & has already grown about 10 feet high. I like it so much, I'm getting another one.

So. Does this look like an Amur Maple? ... finally has leaves out which were not damaged by the freak Artic Spring blast this year. The flower bud cluster has formed, but not open yet.

Here is the multi-trunk, this would be very hard to remove without machinery I should think, but I'm am considering it... the surrounding soil is full of small roots also, very hard to even dig any hole more than a couple of inches
