Is it too late to plant lilies this fall?

Probably too late, just wondered. Snow will probably fly in another month or so. It's in the 40's-50's (F) right now, 40 at night. If I order some more lilies to be delivered in the spring, will they bloom in the summer or will it take a whole year to see blooms? Thanks. Still a little new to lilies here. Phyl

Spring delivered/planted lilies will bloom pretty much on time in the summer. Reputable growers/sellers will properly store fall harvested lilies in temperature controlled coolers for spring sale. I have grown them both ways with no problem. You also can still plant them now as long as your ground is not frozen and you have excellent drainage for them.

Do you, by any chance, know the botanical name for these lilies? It might be on the tag that came with them, or listed in the catalog from which you ordered them. Maybe you could post a link where they are advertised on the internet and someone could i.d. them from a picture. Without this, no one is going to be much help to you. Alina is right. There are companies that seem to make up new names for old plants just so they can market them as new. I am always extremely cautious about ordering anything from anywhere that does not list horticultural names of their plants. Just as a side note, lilies (asiatics, oriental, martagon, orienpets, etc., etc.) are notoriously difficult to grow in the south. (Difficult, not impossible.) On the other hand, lots of things look like lilies that aren't true lilies: crinums and amaryllis, for instance. And then again, there are plants that are commonly called lilies that are not lilies at all: daylilies (hemerocallis) and rain lilies (zephyranthes), for example. To have a chance at success, you need a correct identification of your bulb and as much cultural information as possible.

Lilies (true lilies such as Asiatics etc.) can be planted just about anytime the ground can be worked. If planted too late in the season they probably will not bloom the first year but will most likely send up foliage at least. Daylilies are not actually a bulb, they do have tuberous roots that will store extra food/water. Daylilies can usually be planted at any point up til about a month before cold weather starts to move in. If you plant them just before it gets real cold they may still make it with mulch, but they do better going into winter with a good root system. If these are in bags the one thing you want to be very careful of is rot, plastic leads to condensation and if you have a daylily plant that has sat in that type of condition for awhile then chances are there are quite a few that are really rotting. If possible I would try to open any before you buy them to see if they look or smell bad.

I have a stargazer lily. I moved it to several locations and it never did much of anything, before I put it on the south side of my house. It loves it there, It may not flower for a year or 2 but it will flower. I'd post a picture of mine but I don't know how it's done on this site. There is no place to add attachments

It is fine to plant your lilies now. Put some mulch around them to slow down the rain & that should help some unless you get heavy rain. I can't picture your slope but if you think it needs some bricks use them. Daylilies once they grew would help at the bottom of a slope. It all depend how low your slope is.

FYI: Some sellers (esp. the less expensive ones such as John Scheepers/Van Engelen) don't offer lilies in the Spring - others vary their selection.

For example, Brent & Becky's offer their less cold hardy lilies such as Longiflorum and Formosanum only in their summer catalog (spring planting). But their Summer catalog also includes a good selection of other lilies. Their current and their past summer catalogs are posted on their website if you want to see how the two selling seasons differ. If there's a particular lily you want in the Spring call them up and ask if they're going to offer it. They're very friendly.

Thanks for letting me know about this Helen. And here I thought maybe I could wait til spring to get some of JohnScheepers' lilies. Guess I'm going to ge them now. Phyl
