Planting lillies with stems this late in season?

HI. I found a deal on lillies that have stems a few inches long. We are about a week from our first frost, would lillies with stems survive the winter? If chances are low that they will make it I'll save my money and just buy in the spring. Thanks!

I wouldn't bother. If they have stems on them, then they were dug LAST year and have been out of the ground since, probably kept under refrigeration, possibly refugees from the cut flower industry.

If it's this early and in the stems - despite your spraying - it's most likely over-wintering BS. There's little you can do about it - nor should you, IMHO. If you've got more canes that should be cut out, it'll be obvious enough after your first flush. Clean it out then, not right now if you've already done Spring pruning. (An exception would be an obviously dead cane interfering with new growth - perhaps one you missed in the spring pruning.) I used to do the prune-until-you-see-the-white-pith-thing, but it's too unpredictable. You'll end up cutting plenty of canes that probably would've done just fine, only to see others that looked good die off anyway. Then others you might think should be pruned back hard, end up lasting a couple of years with just a little die-back at the tip. You could try a good shot of Manzate spray everywhere, just in case. That will help to knock it down if there's any BS left. Otherwise, keep spraying on a regular basis to make sure the rest of the bush stays clean. Continue with a good fertilizing program and you'll have enough fresh growth to make this fade away into triviality. Lots of fresh new growth also helps to make an obvious contrast with what you should cut out.

Hi Amoc, Lilium Speciosum, one of the species "parent's" of Oriental hybrids is just about the latest blooming lily that's also winter hardy. My Stargazer have been done for a while for me now (they bloom mid-July for me), my Scheherazade are just finished, my Black Beauty are very close to finished, yet my Speciosum have not even opened yet - though they look like they will start soon. Black Beauty, like many of the late lilies is a Speciosum cross (L. speciosum var. rubrum x L. henryi). Journey's End (AKA Summer's End) blooms late and it was my understanding that it is the latest Oriental hybrid (I don't have this lily). Not surprisingly its also a Speciosum cross, ('Phillipa' x L. speciosum 'Gilrey' cross). However, The Lily Garden has some Oriental's they note bloom in mid-late August. They have a bloom time chart on their website. But use it with a "grain of salt". Horticultural zones are defined by how cold winter gets (NOT how hot summer gets). My experience is that with Maryland's hot summers my lilies bloom earlier here than in Northwest areas with the same zone. Use the chart as a *relative* bloomtime guide, and then it's pretty accurate. The very latest lily I've found is the species lily, Lilium Formosanum. (If anyone knows of any later lily please send it in!) However, because it blooms late and naturally has a small bulb, it's not generally winter hardy in the colder zones (much lower than 6-7). You could try it in zone 5 if you found a warm sunny spot for it. The problem isn't that the bulb can't handle winter freezes, but that it doesn't have time to build back up after being depleted by blooming before it goes dormant in the Fall (stopping photosynthesis). The safest bet for you is probably Speciosum, it has a number of varieties, "Rubrum" (colored like Stargazer) and "Album" which is white. "Uchida" is a superior selection of "Rubrum". In addition, this lily is more shade tlerant than most and is a real butterfly magnet! These three varieties are all readily available both from inexpensive suppliers, (Van Engelen - John Scheepers) and the moderate (Brent and Becky's, The Lily Pad). Jandey, Well we shall see if the spurt continues next year. As to vendors, no, that was a different vendor ... looking back at old emails I see I spent, ouch, $25 for it from a Thai vendor on ebay called "123yaowaluk" and I don't recall seeing an offering of this particular variety or that vendor in a long time. The "Multiple Gold" aka "J4" came from a vendor with an ebay handle of "anyamanee_p" who I know I have seen on ebay recently, and even offering the same variety. But I don't think they export to the US anymore, or at least California - we have overzealous USDA officials that have been know to confiscate most live plants going through Los Angeles. Another "Wow" - looks like I bought both of them in 2008, making this year 5 for both trees. Multiple Gold has been a trouper since year 2, Double Singapore just starting now in the fall of year 5, so there goes that 3 year theory of yours ;)

I have nine pepper plants growing in my basement under artificial light. 3 Bhut Jolokia, 2 Trinidad Moruga Scorpion, 2 Trinidad Douglah, a Orange Habanero Suave, and a yellow Bhut Jolokia. When the night-time temps fall below 55, the flowers will not produce and will possibly fall off. Same will happen with immature fruits. So I brought them in a few weeks ago. Some of them doubled in size in that short amount of time. It probably helps that the room gets up around 80 degrees when the lights are on and drops to the lower 60's at night. I had them on a metal halide for 18 hours a day and switched to the HPS bulb a couple weeks ago and dropped the photoperiod down to 12/12. Make sure your plants have plenty of calcium. Peppers need it. I give them a dose of that with their regular fertilizer every couple weeks. I just bought an Apollo Horticulture GLK400GW19 400w grow light on Amazon for this season and it is amazing. For $125, it is an AWESOME deal. It puts out 36,000 lumens with the MH lamp and 56,000 with the HPS. A Home Depot florescent will only put out about 1,000. I also have some decent T5 florescents that pump out 5,000 lumens. I got those for around $30 a pop. Another decent deal is the Hydrofarm 125w compact florescent. I believe that puts out around 8,000 lumens. All I know is -- don't look directly at the bulb like I did. ;)

I hadn't thought about them being out of the ground that long, I think I will stay away from them.

It's not just that they have been out of the ground a long time, its that the bulbs are "confused" about what season it is. (They haven't had a summer yet.) In Idaho it might stay cold enough that if you plant them nice and deep they wouldn't grow more until springtime, but these bulbs are ripe for sprouting if you have any kind of a warm spell. I'd only buy them if they were so cheap as to be practically free, because you still have to do the work of preparing a bed and planting them.

Interesting comment. Curious where you derive your information. Cutflower growers don't sell so called refugees. As a member of the Association of Cutflower Growers, I don't know anyone who would use this practice. As a matter of fact, if the stems are cut too long which doesn't leave enough for the bulb to store energy for the next season, we compost the bulbs or take them directly to the field and spread them on the field and incorporate them into the soil.

And that is why I used the word "possibly". From time to time this subject comes up, usually relating to low cost bulbs that show up in the "box" stores or the generic mail order orgs. I am not aware of American cut flower growers resorting to selling expended bulbs, I believe the reference was to Dutch growers. Here in Oregon at a major cut flower greenhouse, all expended lily bulbs are composted regardless of the leftover stem length (an interesting process where generated steam enters at the bottom of the pile and sterilizes the contents).

Sorry if my post sounded like a slam to the cut flower industry, it was not intended! If I can nail it down I will post back.

Hi Everyone. Just wanted to follow-up.

I looked into buggycrazy's sale and I'm SO GLAD you mentioned it! Her freshly dug sale lillies are the same price as the ones with long stems I was considering and the shipping is very low. I am buying 45 bulbs for $40 + $7.75 shipping - I dare anyone to beat that deal on nice healthy bulbs!

She is such a very nice lady and she says this may be the last year she sells lillies so if anyone has ever wanted to order from her I suggest you do it now or hold your peace!

You will be amazed at the condition of the bulbs when they arrive. Far better than any I have ordered from other sources. I just planted 2 "Late Pink" orientals I got from her. Since she is practically my neighbor, I just pick them up and save on shipping!
