What are the most common noids?

I'm compiling a list of the most commonly found iris noids (no I.D.) that are found growing about the US (though feel free to submit from anywhere in the world!). Having been on Gardenweb for years now I have seen this question every spring from new gardeners and old. As a start I have I have:

Lent. A Williamson

Honorabile/Sans Souci

i. albicans

i. pallida clones

Flavescens

Indian Chief

What else are folks often seeking for a name for? Thanks for your help!

What an odd question, Mike. LOL! I mean, if it's a NOID, it's a NOID.

But I do think I know what you're getting at. You're wanting to know which historic registered cultivars are most frequently separated from their names and being grown as NOIDS around the country, right?

People ask me what the purples are. I usually respond with kochii, Eleanor Roosevelt, or Crimson King. These are in country cemeteries and around abandoned farmsteads. In a nearby town, somebody has planted a lot of them around telephone and light poles.

Rain water, snow melt, distilled water, as well as air conditioner or dehumidifier condensate are pretty much free of dissolved solids, but bottled water can be very high in dissolved solids, so it isn't reliable as an effective hindrance to necrosis of leaf tips and/or margins. When plants wilt while the soil is still moist, it's a very good bet the soil is too wet, and starved of enough oxygen for roots to function normally, which, since water uptake is an energy driven process, causes loss of turgor and wilting. Unless root function is severely compromised, affected plants normally regain turgor and stand up again as they close stomata in preparation for the dark cycle. If a plant wilts during the day & recovers turgidity at night while the soil is still damp or wet, it needs less water in the rhizosphere or a soil that has better aeration/holds less water at container capacity (when saturated). In my small west bend town, In the old neighborhoods, all kinds of silver maple, ashes, including mountain ash, many lindens, norway maples, and few sweetgum, a few surviving elms. In the newer neighborhoods, the trees are more diverse and include all the new varieties of trees, like river birch, red maples, and non fruiting crab apples. Residents have to get approval from the city to plant trees in the boulevard. No invasives allowed, nor any trees that harbor diseases. What is the most common southern camellia? What is good for zone

If you understand the nature of a camellia to bloom in the deep coastal south, you may be better able to determine whether they're 'worth the effort.' Here, camellias start the season loaded with buds. When they sense it's time, a few start to open. If a hard freeze comes, those that are open turn brown and drop off. When it's warm again, more open up. That repeats throughout the winter. The C. sasanquas have started, the others have different start times among the C. japonicas. "Blood of China' usually hardly begins to bloom until April and frequently the buds blast due to heat and we don't see all of them bloom. Here's one difference between a near-zone 7 and a true zone 8b where camellias thrive: When we have a 'cold spell' here the temperature may drop below freezing during the night and sub-freezing temps last only a few hours. The plants adapt to that. They have more trouble adapting to freezing temps that come and stay for days. If I were researching camellias for a colder climate, I would search all the university hort sites I could find and read all the books the library could borrow for me on camellias. I would look for those that bloom early on, like the sasanquas, and those that bloom late among the Camellia japonicas, so that I had a better chance that buds would not freeze before they opened well, or freeze just as they came into bloom. I would plan to plant in the best sheltered area I could find. My Mathotiana in in a southwest facing corner partially sheltered by the overhang of the house. They are almost done blooming. The orange one is prob. around 24-26 inches tall and the bloom is about 5+ inches and recurved, spidery as you can see. The creamy one is prob. 20 inches tall and the bloom seems to be almost 5 inches. Thanks

There is alot of I Germanica in the cemeteries. I also see Mme Henri Cayeux and Loreley along with those Sambucina clones in old gardens.

'Old Survivors' may be a better way of looking at it. The iris that can survive for decades on little or no care, so outlast their names.

Maybe try asking this again during bloom season. I've seen most of what's already been mentioned growing either along the road or in cemetaries, but I'm having a hard time coming up with anything else.

In California Crimson King is to be found everywhere and is an everbloomer. It is virtually naturalized. A new tenant brought some irises with her (unknown) and planted them this spring. Well even on the northside of the house what is blooming right now is Crimson King! The very tall and very early blooming (March) lavender is commonly noticed is San Gabriel. Frieda Mohr and Wm. A Satchell are commonly seen blooming in odd places.

I think it would be nice to compile a geographic list:
Iris_gal: If you are going to put together a list how about dividing it up between Northeast, Southeast, Central, Southwest, Northwest, etc?
And everyone who is on this Forum, how about sending Mike and iris_gal a list either now or in the Spring of what you see as old survivors growing vigorously around your locale?
That would make an interesting bit of information to share with everyone.
